We were lucky to catch up with Aaron Becker recently and have shared our conversation below.
Aaron, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
To be honest , I feel like there is a line sometimes like I noticed that a lot of people that knew me from a long time ago and high school often ask if I still rap which truthfully I was never really a rapper lol I think they just categorize that into the same thing as being an artist because its easier to comprehend. It doesn’t really ever bother me I just take it with a grain of salt. The one thing I do feel happens is , I will put out a record or an Ep and to me personally it resonates a lot and I will feel like this is the best thing I have ever made but the reflection from my fans doesn’t show that its technically my best. So for me I try to except it but in the back of my head its always like how did you not see it lol. I still feel all my work is me its just some stuff I feel more connected to so there is always that battle like do I want to even open this book to the world you know do I want them to see that side of me. However there might be someone that needs to hear that record so as long as we are connecting with somebody I dont care if its just 1 or 1 million I’m gonna put it out there for them.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I go by the name of A Beck as an artist on social media I’m @abeckmusic. So , nice to meet you lol I am an independent Singer/Songwriter and Ive been doing that for 6 years. I got my first start in the industry working with JulyDaProducer in 2016 later leading to a management deal with Rob Campman formerly known as Southstar. Later moving to a record deal in 2019 then back to the independent side Ive been blessed to work on records with close friends a like ThatDevastater , KEVINxMO. I think I’m most proud of pushing through a lot of the downfalls I have had in this is industry , theres always so many opportunities and it feels like you will never land one when you just miss it sometimes but I’ve always stayed true to my art and kept pushing. When I became a father I realized like this was the chance to build my kids future and set them up better than I was even though my parents did a great job I knew music would give me the chance to build that life for them everyone dreams about. So my message is to never quit continue to believe in you and keep going.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
This is a tough one because I don’t wanna paint a bad picture of anyone but I’m an honest guy. So in 2018 I signed my first deal to Therapist Music. I was thinking like wow this is it man this is my break. I worked hard for two years , got to be in studios with people that had done amazing things. I think for me it was like yo I need to soak all of this up this is some serious stuff. I learned the business and was waiting for the chance to come. That never worked out lol You cant just wait for things. I remember telling my big bro and producer Dev like bro I’m down bad man I don’t know what to do. He talked me out of it he said man you gotta have fun get back to you. So with my team we all agreed to leave the label which in my head I was like man I have lost my mind walking away from this like this is a true chance. However it felt right and the moment I left that day it felt like it just all came back to me I felt like I started making even better music knowing the business moving the right way. To this day it was the best thing I ever did for myself and I love that because most people quit when they walk away from a record deal but the music is larger than that I feel like I’m a testimony to that.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding thing for me as an artist is when I have a fan reach out to me and say like yo this record reminds me of this time I was doing … and whatever that story is they tell me you know. Like to me music is emotion , I write purely off emotion that the music makes me feel. So every time I get to hear how one of my records makes one of my fans feel or they share a story with me it just inspires me to the moon and Im ready to keep going.
