We were lucky to catch up with Lori Moffit recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lori, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear your thoughts about family businesses.
My hope is that eventually my children will take over the business. I would love if my children joined my business right now but I think they need time to appreciate it. When I first started, they thought it was all for fun and they were eager to help but then when they realized it was work they did not want to help. I decided to invest a percent of our earnings into the whole family and of course, they loved the payday, but I am teaching them that the payday only comes after they have put work in. It has been a big lesson in work and work ethic, and I am hoping that if they don’t get the lesson right now, that they will get it one day. Mom had to be serious and put in work at first so that we could reap the benefits later.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I grew up with a father who loved taking photos. As far back as I can remember, and way before that, he always had a camera in his hand. I have tons of photos from my childhood because we have always been a picture taking family. I love the camera and capturing the fun moments, the big moments as well as the small ones. I lost my mother in 2014 and my father in 2022, and both times, I turned to my photo albums and boxes of pictures to reminisce about the good times. because of my dad, I had plenty of photos to choose from.
as I sort through those photos, I am always coming across Photo Booth strips from an old trip to the mall or the movies. I have always loved hopping in the booth, counting down for the pictures and choosing several different funny poses. When I got married in 2014, I made sure to include in my budget a photo booth for me and my guests. even now, 10 years later, my husband and I will randomly go through the photos and enjoy a laugh thinking about the fun from our wedding day. the poses and props that people chose and their expressions still make me smile. Photo booths are a whole new level of fun, fun that I like to be a part of and can now help people create with my business.
Since I started my business, I have been on the other side of the booth and I love it. I get to see families gather together to capture the moments, act silly, and just have fun with one another. One could think in this era of cell phone cameras that the desire for Photo Booth fun wouldn’t be as popular, but I have found it is the opposite. People love to take pictures, and I love being a part of that.
PhotoGloriPix Photo Booth provides props and personalized photo strips so people will know what event they attended and when it occurred. We offer digital photos for instant sharing. We want the fun of a Photo Booth to be accessible to everyone.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Just starting the business. there were always people telling me to wait, telling me there’s no market, that people won’t book me. I have toyed with the idea of starting my own business for the past three years but someone was always convincing me that it wasn’t time. eventually I had to listen to myself, I felt it was time and so I went for it. Business did start out slow and I realized that I had to put a lot of work in on the front end, but it just made me more determined to make it work. This is something I want to do for my children, show them that when you really want something and work for it, you can have it, but you won’t have it if you give up. that is where my resilience comes from, knowing they are watching and learning from me.
Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
I made a decision that I was actually going to start the business and so I went on a spending freeze. I didn’t spend anything that was not absolutely necessary, reminding myself daily that if I went without now, I would have it in due time. I also had to remind myself that I was investing in the business and so essentially I am investing in me and my children, which is the end goal. I did start out with the bare minimum, the booth and the iPad, and I paced myself with backdrops and props, adding those as time went on.
