Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Marcopolo Lua. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
MarcoPolo, appreciate you joining us today. Do you think folks should manage their own social media or hire a professional? What do you do?
When I decided to start my business, I understood that social media would play a significant role in my marketing strategy. I view it as a visual resume that showcases my work to potential customers. However, I must admit that managing social media is a demanding task that I have struggled with at times.
I made the decision not to hire a social media company because I wanted to avoid generating a generic following. I was also hesitant to entrust someone who might view social media as merely a job rather than a genuine opportunity for growth with the business with the same passion as I.
I see social media as a modern version of door-to-door sales. Instead of knocking on people’s doors, I target small business owners, social elites, soccer moms, and even influential politicians by messaging them.
I have observed positive outcomes from adding a personal touch to my interactions with customers on their pages. Whether it’s a “like” or a “comment,” people appreciate the extra attention and support. It’s important to remember that not everyone regularly checks their direct messages. As a business owner, it’s crucial to not only be seen but also to leave a lasting impression on your potential client’s minds.

MarcoPolo, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is MarcoPolo Lua. I am a part-time actor and work for T-Mobile. I started a business during the pandemic due to the fear of being laid off from T-Mobile, not being able to book any acting gigs, especially because I decided not to get vaccinated, and then with the strike that occurred right after the pandemic, I was sure it would be a while before I would be on set again.
I am the owner of Wonder’s Balloon, a balloon decoration company that specializes in elevating luxury events. Our mission is to relieve stress for our clients and ensure their complete satisfaction.
What sets Wonder’s Balloon apart from other vendors is our professionalism and attention to detail. From the moment we are booked, we communicate our step-by-step process to the client and ensure that we are prompt, efficient, and on time.Unfortunately, we have witnessed many events where other vendors lack basic skills, causing stress for the clients.
One of the things I am most proud of is our partnerships with our community, where we can help other small business owners thrive. You’d be surprised what balloons can do!
As a balloon company, we are aware of the pollution our products can cause. That’s why we try our best to educate our customers about the possible dangers of balloons and how to use and dispose of them properly.
In addition to our safety protocol, we are also actively working with Balloon Mission, a non-profit organization that collects, protects, and preserves balloons. Their mission is to collect balloons after props are finished using them before they end up in the trash, causing harm to the environment, wildlife, and even us.

Have you ever had to pivot?
Chasing a dream is not cheap, so I’ve had to pivot several times. At times, I’ve felt like a chef throwing spaghetti against the wall, hoping something would stick!
Aside from my main job, my first “side hustle” was selling knives for Cutco. Next, I started driving for Uber, then went on to sell shampoo for Monat. After that, I started reselling used items on eBay and OfferUp. And now, I’m decorating events.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is to never cut corners or do a job poorly. It’s essential to plan properly and prepare for the worst-case scenario. While we understand that unexpected changes can disrupt even the best-laid plans, we cannot base our business model on that mindset. We must always hope for the best but plan for the worst.
