We were lucky to catch up with Patrick Presco recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Patrick, thanks for joining us today. Can you share a customer success story with us?
I would consider the service that I provide ground-breaking for the hair loss industry. And most people have no idea about what this alternative hair loss solution is. So thank you, I appreciate you giving me this opportunity to shed some light and bring more attention to what it is I do. It’s officially called Scalp Micropigmentation SMP (also known as the Hair Tattoo). When performed by a skill technician, this proven-concept involves applying thousands of microdots into the scalp by way of micro needles and a precision tattoo machine. Using this modified tattoo technique, I’m able to restore hairlines on fully bald men by tattooing texture-like hair stubble for that clean buzz cut look. And for anyone experiencing hair thinning, I’m able to add a fuller looking head of hair by reducing the contrast from scalp to hair. Many can benefit from this treatment and that’s what makes this business so exciting. I can even conceal and camouflage scalp scars that blend in seamlessly with existing hair.
That feel good feeling you get just after a fresh haircut is something we’ve all experienced before. And studies have shown the connection between looking good and feeling good. The old saying, “Look good, feel good” holds true for many of us.
I keep that top of mind every time, with each client that walks through my door. Each of them have received great end results and have experienced a positive outcome working with me; Because in this business, there is no room for error. Treatments are often done in 3 sessions, and working conservatively helps to ensure that we ‘dial’ in the right look.
If I had to pick only one success story, I’d share a special case. It wasn’t male pattern balding or female hair thinning in this case. This particular client had endured a very traumatic assault that had left him battered and broken. After countless facial reconstructive surgeries he began to feel more like his old self. Except for one thing, the large scars that spanned across the back of his head from ear to ear was something that his doctor could not fix. His doctor scoured the internet looking for solutions and found me and the SMP service that I provide. Being referred to by a well respected reconstructive surgeon was an honor for me, and I have yet to thank him due to privacy reasons. But Doctor, I thank you for trusting me with your patient. He is now feeling more like himself, the way things should have been if it weren’t for that unforeseen traumatic event.
The finished result for my client was a seamless blend in the look of short-shaven follicles. Working with years of art experience, I skillfully applied varying ink shades to match his scalp skin undertones and created texture-like hair to conceal the scars from that traumatic event. He’s now living his life, leaving what had happened in the past behind, and now he’s able to move forward with his life.
This is why I do what I do. It allows me to be able to run a successful business and help people move forward, having a more positive outlook for whats ahead.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Piggybacking on the response from the first question, my art background spans over 20 years; I attended Art school at SDSU in the early 2000s and have a proven track record working consistently as a Graphic Designer here in San Diego. I trained in Sacramento to learn the art of Scalp Micropigmentation in March 2022. As a bald man myself, I saw this modified tattoo technique as something ground-breaking. I saw it as a great solution for hair loss. No toxic hair growth chemicals, the treatment is non-surgical with only minimal discomfort during the treatment, and it’s not super expensive when compared to the cost of a hair transplant procedure.
I already had ink on my upper arm, some colorful illustrated tattoos done in a Japanese art style. I saw SMP no differently than getting a traditional tattoo. Many people get traditional tattoos because it “looks cool”, makes them feel good or represents something about themselves. Same for SMP, most people get it to look good feel good, in-turn, naturally boosting their confidence and self-esteem. Given my extensive background in art, my entrepreneurial spirt, and interest in hair loss solutions, it was a natural fit for me to get into this business to help others that are dealing with hair loss.
My primary focus is SMP and only SMP. It is a niche within the hair loss industry and I deliver realistic results with the years of attained knowledge from working within the art field. Pair that with a natural eye for composition and aesthetics; Always taking key features into consideration like clients’ facial features, head shapes, skin tones and hair patterns/ textures, which all play a vital role in achieving successful results.
I take great pride in the work that I produce, using controlled hand muscle memory and fine-tuned motor skills to deliver ink into the scalp at the right depth. During treatments, I’ll often take a step back to change perspective to see the ‘big picture’ results that I’m producing in real-time, and every time, I’m amazed. Creating and bringing back something from nothing, building up texture-like hair that looks realistic. Or during a density fill treatment, seeing the appearance of thinning hair start to take on a fuller look is very satisfying for me, and most importantly for my clients.
Each client is different because everyone is unique but everyone wants results that look realistic and natural. Looking good and feeling good will benefit them in all aspects of their lives. And that’s very important to me that I deliver on that every time. I genuinely care about my clients and we work collaboratively to achieve great results, and I feel that sets me apart from others working in this space.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Earning the trust of viewers and potential clients is key. Early on, finding clients to work with was a big challenge. And I understood why; I’d be tattooing thousands of microdots into a prominent and highly visible feature of the body- their head. It’s the first thing people see, so it has to be done to a flawless degree. And when I was just starting out in this business, I did not have a portfolio of work to show people what I could do. And on top of that, to do it the right way, SMP has to be done in a licensed facility that is clean and sanitary. SMP is non-surgical but we’re still breaking the skin so cleanliness has to be a top priority.
I managed to find a permanent make-up studio to see clients and perform SMP there. It was licensed with the city and a very clean environment. Once I established myself there, it was a matter of continuing to build the trust future / potential clients. And the way I did it was by creating content for my website and social media. In charge of my own Marketing, my plan was to create content that was informative and included details about everything SMP.
Months in, clients were few and far between. But I stuck with it. Practicing countless hours, tattooing melons and fake skin whenever not working on actual clients. My muscle memory became stronger, I was soon able to handle the tattoo machine at hours on end comfortably. Always keeping in mind proper ergonomics because I plan to provide this service for a long time and continue to build Pigment2scalp.
Eventually, I got into a good rhythm taking on new clients and that allowed me to open my own private studio and create a good work life balance. Me and my family maintain a complex schedule. And having a shared calendar is invaluable. Staying up to date and organized ensures that I’m present for all of life’s important moments and also allows me to give my clients my full attention when it’s time for business.
I think for every goal worth reaching, there comes sacrifices. It’s all a balance and what your priorities are.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Before starting Pigment2scalp, I had an old personal Facebook and Instagram account that I rarely used. But I knew when planning to start Pigment2scalp, that social media would be a main driver in my marketing.
My primary social media platform of choice is Instagram (IG). I use IG as an informational source for potential clients. There they can learn all about SMP. I’ll cover everything they need to know about the topic, including Frequently Asked Questions and before and after results. Each post is thoughtfully produced and paired with captions that serve vital bits of info to readers, with my location and also lists best ways to contact me.
However, it’s not all potential clients that tune-in and follow my IG. I’ve noticed that many of my followers are other SMP Artists. There’s this sense of pride and camaraderie among like-minded SMP Artists. I consider them my SMP Colleagues and they’re worldwide! Washington, Vancouver, the Philippines, Italy, Brazil to name a few. It’s exciting to be a part of this industry and social media has been an invaluable marketing tool. As well as a great way to learn more and tune-in to what is new within the industry.
