We were lucky to catch up with Jocelyn Grim recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jocelyn , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Often outsiders look at a successful business and think it became a success overnight. Even media and especially movies love to gloss over nitty, gritty details that went into that middle phase of your business – after you started but before you got to where you are today. In our experience, overnight success is usually the result of years of hard work laying the foundation for success, but unfortunately, it’s exactly this part of the story that most of the media ignores. Can you talk to us about your scaling up story – what are some of the nitty, gritty details folks should know about?
I originally started my dance fitness business with the intent to do a plethora of in-person events and classes but I realized the inconsistencies of teaching dance classes in person. There were a lot of conflicts with people’s schedules due to having to take care of kids, family matters or just having a busy schedule. I decided to transition to an online model specifically on YouTube with the hopes of being able to reach a couple hundred people. That quickly became a couple thousand per video. The pivot to the online world was important because we live in a digital age everyone is on their phone. I wanted to bring fitness to the living room, so no matter if you had a busy day or if you’re a stay-at-home mom looking for a quick way to debrief from errands, you would have online videos right at the tip of your hands for free. The consistency alone has driven “Fit and Fab Crew” to over 8,000 subscribers in just 6 months. So constancy is important but my heart for wanting to help women get fit and stay in shape is even bigger and that’s where the passion and consistency is derived from.
Jocelyn , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a woman that has a passion of helping others and wanting women to succeed physically, mentally and anyway possible. Growing up I was a competitive cheerleader so I always loved dancing and working out. The love for keeping my body active and remaining healthy is what’s led me to dance fitness. Being able to still express myself like I wanted as a cheerleader, but also to help others get fit was some thing that I loved. Fit and Fab Crew is an online dance business that focuses on helping women shape and tone their body, get healthy or just simply have fun. Women are able to purchase a subscription for $6.99 per month for exclusive content and workouts, dancing to Missy Elliot, Beyoncé, and more. These dance videos, allow women to let loose and have fun giving them a good workout. This allows them to burn calories, stay in shape and most importantly, love themselves. Fit and Fab Crew provides amazing fun videos for women in the dance fitness realm, and this is 100% online so even if you don’t have time to drive after work to a gym or if you don’t feel like going to a dance class in person you are able to bring the dance class into your living room. This is more convenient and helps women stay more consistent with their dreams and their goals.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Put God first! God is the owner of your business and God is the provider of your business. So you always have to put God first and run your business with the same integrity as the Bible tells us to. There may be times when you might not want to do business the right way but at the end of the day, having characteristics of a Godly business is the way that your business will remain fruitful.
Have you ever had to pivot?
The time I had to pivot was moving to an online dance model. I was nervous at first because I didn’t know if people would watch my videos. I was teaching at a gym at the time and only saw 12 members per class so I decided to take the risk to post my first online workout. I was worried about being judged and what others would think of me but had to face my fears. I told myself if I received more views on my first video than I had members in my fitness class in person then I would remain online. Within the first hour of posting my first dance workout, there were quadruple the amount of views on the video than there were people in my class. I quickly fell in love with being online it allowed me to be compensated through online videos and enjoy what I do I would have never expected the growth of my business to happen so quickly.
