We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nicki Panick. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nicki below.
Nicki, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Once I set on cosmetology as a new career, I went to Capri learning centers to get my education. All of the instructors at Capri played a big role in what I know now. They taught me all different kinds of techniques, and showed me which I like best and how to build off of it. They really take their time with you at this school and make sure you understand the basics of each component. While learning here, I found my passion lies more in fun hair coloring, different haircuts to match a person’s style, and barbering.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Ever since I was little, I’ve loved everything having to do with cosmetics. I loved doing nails, hair braiding and styling, makeup, skincare, etc. while I was attending school for journalism in Albany, I decided to follow my passion and dive into a whole new career. Since I grew up doing these things ahead of time, I really fell into place in this industry. So far, it has been so rewarding being able to play a part in helping people feel like the best version of themselves. I enjoy every aspect of cosmetology, but my main focuses are hair coloring and hair cutting/barbering. I am a huge believer in continuing education, so I plan on getting more training on nails and lashes in the upcoming future.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My long-term goal that is currently driving my creative journey is owning something of my own in the future. While I love being a team player and working with others, down the line I plan on opening up my own studio/salon once I feel I have solid experience and clientele.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
After high school, I decided I wanted to go to college. Starting off at 18 years old, I wanted to go to school for human services and psychology. Then, I switched to journalism when I realized I enjoyed research and writing. Although, once COVID hit and schooling wasn’t the best anymore, I decided to put that on hold and completely switch things up at cosmetology school. Although I won’t be working in the original field I intended, being a hairstylist can mean you have to play the role of a therapist at times. So, I have no regrets!
