We recently connected with Rella B Books and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Rella B thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
I vividly remember the thrill of earning my first dollar as a Kid Lit author. After a reading that, in hindsight, was quite lackluster, a mother approached me, praising my story and expressing her desire to purchase my book. To my surprise and delight, she bought both of my titles and even asked to follow me on Instagram! That moment was a significant validation for me, bolstering my determination to pursue this journey further.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I began this venture because I wanted to create the media and literature that I wanted my young daughter to consume. I have made my mark in children’s educational entertainment as a 4-time award-winning podcast host and 2-time award-winning children’s book author. With a passion for fostering literacy and creativity, I cover topics like financial literacy, motivation, gratitude, and self-love. My award-winning podcast, “Reading with Rella B,” promotes literacy, comprehension, and a love for reading among children. Through captivating storytelling and educational content, I engage both children and parents, creating a wholesome media experience.
Key pillars of my platform include mindful engagement, diverse representation in children’s literature, and integrating physical fitness into educational content. My unique approach encourages reflective learning and active participation.
I’m also committed to balanced media through my visual literacy-based YouTube channel, which addresses overstimulation challenges in children’s media while promoting healthy cognitive development. Additionally, I offer resources for fellow authors, including social media content toolkits, promotional strategies, and guidance for successful book tours. I provide advice to help authors achieve their goals and make an impact in children’s literature.

How did you build your audience on social media?
In my journey as an author and content creator, I once fell prey to the allure of quick social media growth, unknowingly importing bot followers and participating in engagement groups. Realizing the inauthentic nature of this approach, I took the difficult but necessary step of undoing these practices, prioritizing genuine connections over inflated numbers. This experience taught me the importance of transparency and authenticity in building a lasting online presence. Now, I dedicate my time to helping fellow creators navigate social media growth organically, emphasizing quality over quantity. My goal is to empower others to build their online presence without letting it consume their entire business. For more insights and strategies, you can visit my website at rellabbooks.com.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
In my inaugural year as a creative entrepreneur, I ambitiously set out to build a team to help manage my growing workload. Little did I know, this endeavor would become one of my most valuable learning experiences. The adage “hire slow, fire fast” quickly became my mantra, though its wisdom only truly sank in after I found myself scammed out of thousands of dollars due to my overeager trust in upfront payments. As I navigated the complexities of managing a global team, I learned the delicate balance of being understanding about missed deadlines due to unforeseen circumstances while maintaining professional standards. This journey has taught me the importance of clear communication, patience, and cautious optimism in business relationships. Moving forward, I’m committed to fostering a fair yet prudent approach to expanding my team, armed with the hard-earned lessons of my first year.
