Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Eline Van Den Storme. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Eline, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
Something I do differently from the industry standard is focusing on realism through minimalism. In special effects makeup, the trend often leans toward creating dramatic, highly detailed looks that immediately grab attention. While I enjoy complex creations, I prefer a more nuanced approach, where subtle imperfections or understated details make the effects more believable. Whether it’s creating a character’s aging or an injury, I focus on the fine line between makeup and reality, ensuring that the effects blend seamlessly with the narrative rather than drawing attention to themselves.

Eline, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a special effects makeup artist originally from the north of France. My passion for cinema and creating illusions that look real on screen led me to this field. After completing a specialized makeup school and working as a wigmaker and makeup artist at Disneyland Paris, I moved to Los Angeles.
I discovered my love for special effects makeup when I realized it allowed me to bring the imaginary to life. The project that marked me the most was a shoot where I had to create hailstone impacts on a bald man’s head in just 15 minutes. The realism of my work impressed the director, and from that moment, I knew this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
I focus on creating hyper-realistic effects for film, television, and other media. My work includes everything from subtle aging and character transformations to more dramatic effects like wounds, injuries, and fantastical creatures. I provide both makeup and sculpting services, and I’m deeply invested in ensuring that every detail enhances the narrative without drawing unnecessary attention to itself.
My clients often come to me because they need makeup that blends seamlessly into the story and enhances the believability of the characters. Whether it’s creating realistic scars or subtle facial adjustments, I solve the problem of making the unreal look real. My work helps directors and producers maintain immersion for the audience.
What sets me apart is my dedication to realism through minimalism. I believe that less can often be more when it comes to special effects. Rather than relying on flashy or exaggerated designs, I focus on subtle, believable details that ground the character or effect in reality. I’m also very passionate about continuously learning and refining my techniques to ensure my work is cutting-edge and innovative.
I’m most proud of my journey—leaving France to pursue my dreams in the U.S., where I continue to learn and grow in my craft. I’m also proud of the moments when I’ve been able to step up in challenging situations, like the time I replaced a key makeup artist on a shoot and exceeded expectations under pressure.
I want potential clients and followers to know that I’m deeply committed to authenticity in my work. I strive to create effects that not only impress but also contribute meaningfully to the stories they are part of. I value collaboration, and I’m always looking for opportunities to push the boundaries of what makeup and special effects can achieve.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Growing up, I was captivated by the show Face Off, which showcased the artistry and innovation behind special effects makeup. Watching talented artists push the boundaries of creativity inspired me to pursue my passion and instilled in me the importance of collaboration and continuous learning in the industry.
In addition to that, I love reading books on mythology. These stories not only fuel my imagination but also provide a rich context for understanding character development and storytelling, which are essential in my craft.
Moreover, video games like Silent Hill, Resident Evil, and The Last of Us have profoundly impacted my work. These games incorporate elements of mythology and reinterpret legends in ways that resonate with me as a special effects artist. The intricate world-building and character designs encourage me to explore new ideas and techniques in my makeup work, allowing me to create effects that are both innovative and rooted in narrative depth.
This is why I believe it’s essential to draw inspiration from other artists and collaborate with them. Each collaboration opens new perspective and possibilities, and reaching my artistic journey.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
One aspect of my journey as a creative that non-creatives may struggle to understand is the level of vulnerability and self-doubt that often accompanies artistic expression. While many people see the final product as a polished piece of art, they may not realize the countless hours of work, experimentation, and occasional failure that lead to that result.
For instance, in special effects makeup, achieving the desired realism requires not only technical skills but also a willingness to take risks and learn from mistakes. There are times when a design doesn’t turn out as envisioned, and the emotional impact of that can be significant. However, it’s through these challenges that I grow as an artist and refine my craft.
Additionally, the creative process can be deeply personal. My inspirations reflect my inner thoughts and feelings. This connection can make it difficult to receive critique, as it feels like a reflection of myself rather than just the work.
I believe that understanding the emotional and mental complexities of being a creative can foster greater appreciation for the work we produce. It’s important for non-creatives to know that behind every piece of art is a journey filled with passion, perseverance, and a continuous quest for improvement.
