We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mark E. Menzie. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mark E. below.
Mark E., appreciate you joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
My journey in the fashion industry started with a deep passion for design and creativity, which I nurtured by attending Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). My academic background gave me the technical knowledge I needed to understand fabrics, silhouettes, and construction. However, most of my learning came through hands-on experience. Working as a freelance stylist for luxury retail brands, I was able to immerse myself in real-world projects that involved everything from styling to digital sales and visual merchandising.
Over the past decade, I learned by being adaptable and open to challenges. Networking and collaborating with industry professionals also taught me a lot about the business side of fashion. It’s an ongoing process of learning and evolving with trends, technologies, and the changing retail landscape.
Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process?
Looking back, I could have sped up my learning by seeking mentorship earlier. Having someone with industry experience guide me would have saved time figuring things out on my own. I also wish I had been more proactive about joining industry organizations and attending more fashion events early on to broaden my network.
What skills do you think were most essential?
The most essential skills in my journey have been:
Creative Direction & Styling: The ability to visualize and execute a concept is critical in fashion.
Trend Forecasting: Being able to anticipate trends before they hit the market has given me an edge in styling and marketing.
Communication & Collaboration: Whether working with clients or a team, clear communication is key to making a project successful.
Digital Marketing & Sales: In today’s market, understanding the digital landscape and how to leverage it for brand exposure has been invaluable.
What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
One of the main obstacles was access to resources early in my career. Fashion can be an expensive industry to break into, whether it’s the cost of attending events, purchasing tools, or building a portfolio. Another challenge was the competitive nature of the industry, which made it difficult to gain visibility as a new stylist. Additionally, balancing freelance work with ongoing self-education required managing my time and energy effectively.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
About Me & How I Got Into the Fashion Industry
My journey in the fashion industry began with a deep passion for creativity and style. Growing up, I was always fascinated by the power of clothing and how it could transform not just appearances but confidence and identity. I pursued this passion academically by studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), where I gained a technical understanding of the industry, from garment construction to trend forecasting. However, my real introduction to the business of fashion came through hands-on experience as a freelance fashion stylist. Over the past 10 years, I’ve worked with a variety of luxury retail brands, assisting with styling, branding, and digital sales, which allowed me to gain valuable insights into the industry from the inside out.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is the ability to bring ideas to life and have a tangible impact on people’s emotions, perspectives, and even their lives. There’s a unique satisfaction that comes from transforming an abstract concept or vision into something that others can experience, whether it’s through clothing, art, or any other creative medium.
As a fashion designer and stylist, one of the most fulfilling parts of my work is seeing how a well-curated look or design can boost someone’s confidence, help them express their individuality, or even change how they feel about themselves. It’s not just about making something visually appealing, but about creating something with meaning and purpose.
Additionally, being a creative allows for constant learning and evolution. There’s always room to experiment, take risks, and push boundaries. Every project comes with its own set of challenges, and overcoming those challenges is incredibly rewarding because it drives personal and professional growth.
Lastly, the ability to connect with others—whether it’s clients, collaborators, or an audience—through creative expression is powerful. Seeing how my work resonates with others or sparks inspiration is truly one of the most rewarding feelings.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, there is a clear mission driving my creative journey: empowerment through self-expression. Fashion, for me, is more than just clothes or trends—it’s about helping people connect with their true selves and express their individuality confidently and authentically. Whether I’m designing a piece, styling a client, or consulting with a brand, my goal is always to create a visual narrative that aligns with the client’s identity while empowering them to stand out.
On a larger scale, I aim to shift the conversation in fashion towards inclusivity, representation, and personal authenticity. I want to break down traditional fashion boundaries and inspire others to embrace their unique style, regardless of background or convention. Fashion has the power to be transformative, and I want my work to contribute to a culture where everyone feels seen, valued, and stylish in their own right.
Additionally, I’m deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of fashion creatives. Teaching and sharing my knowledge with young designers and stylists is a significant part of my mission. I want to inspire others to see fashion not just as a commercial industry but as a platform for storytelling, empowerment, and personal growth.
