We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brian Copeland. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brian below.
Brian, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
People who are successful in any area of life do something that ordinary people don’t. It isn’t glamorous. It won’t wind up on any “5 Tips to Success.” But it is the proven formula for getting what you want in life. And it can be summed up in two words. Consistent and persistent. When a music star seemingly comes out of nowhere to dominate the top 10 charts we often say things like “overnight sensation.” When an athlete rises up and dominates their sport we use words like “natural talent.” If someone is successful in business, finances, relationships, etc. we use phrases such as “they are lucky.” But the truth is you didn’t see the music star spending the last 10 years grinding away making less than good music. You didn’t get to experience the hundreds of thousands of reps of hard work, sweat, and frustration as that athlete was developing their skills. You weren’t there before that business was successful when the owner was struggling, learning, and making lots of failures as they were learning how to be successful. Don’t ever think that you can’t be successful because you don’t have the natural ability or that people are against you. FYI – many people will always be against you and those are people who aren’t successful and don’t want you passing them by. Become consistent which gives results. And the only way you become consistent is to stay persistent when you experience setbacks. No one ever achieved a high level of fitness in 3 months… but 2 years of consistent exercise will get you far… 5 years even further. Success coach Tony Robbins says, “everyone overestimates what they can achieve in 1 year but dramatically underestimates what they can achieve in 5.” Our world is all about instant gratification but if you really truly want something then start your 5-year journey now. You will experience success with each passing day. And ultimately you will realize that you are a success because you will learn to believe in yourself.

Brian, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I help people like you who want to get strong, pain-free, athletic, lean, and fit so they can swap out their doctor appointments for fun with their friends or family or just have the best body at the pool. I also teach realistic martial arts so that good people can defend themselves and their family and walk with confidence. I am relentless in learning, testing, and applying what I do so that I can get the absolute best results for my clients.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I was raised by a very risk averse family. I was always told to be careful or the sky would fall or something. By implementing that strategy in life it sure worked. I rarely lost anything… but I didn’t really gain much from it either. There are people who live on the other side of the spectrum who are all about risk and taking chances. And sometimes big risks pay off… but usually they bomb out and leave the risk taker with a heap of troubles. Somewhere in the middle lies a healthier approach. Taking smart risks. Spending a little time thinking about something but then taking action one way or the other. As someone with a hyper analytical mind I am often subject to paralysis by analysis. My big lesson is to take a look and then make a decision and trust my experience. If I get it wrong… well then I just earned some new experience.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I first started my fitness and realistic martial arts businesses I thought that I would only be training athletes, fire fighters, police and other tough and healthy people. What I found out is that people usually have old injuries, pains, and movement restrictions… especially the high performers. This started my journey into learning how to help people get out of pain, restore lost ranges of motion and joint health. It is one of the single biggest areas of my business that has led to the greatest growth potential for me as I am able to work with and help clients that thought they wouldn’t be able to workout. As a side benefit I am able to heal my own pains, injuries, and movement restrictions that I have acquired in my life… who am I kidding that is a main benefit.
