We were lucky to catch up with Dr. Neema Hooker recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Neema , thanks for joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?

The trajectory of my career changed several years ago when I was treating a patient with a history of diabetes, hypertension and high blood pressure. Working together, we created a plan with lifestyle changes that helped him get off some medications and improve his overall health. However, he was unable to remain consistent because he didn’t have support at home. (Also, being married to an excellent baker didn’t help him). For years, my patient would make progress and then fall back into his old habits. This experience made me realize just how much our social circles influence our overall health. Our patients don’t always have the support that they need in their lives to adopt a healthier lifestyle and that’s essential to achieving optimal wellness. This experience made me want to do something different in the wellness space. That’s why I launched Revolutionary Health and Wellness PLLC to help people exceed their wellness goals with the support of licensed physicians and a community of like-minded individuals who share a commitment to developing a healthier lifestyle.

Dr. Neema , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

Helping others through health and wellness has been my life-long passion. I knew at three years old that I wanted to become a doctor and help others feel their best. My love of health and wellness was largely inspired by my father who was a psychiatrist. He helped me to understand the critical role medical professionals play in our communities. A doctor’s job is not only to help sick people feel better; we’re partners in ensuring that our patients and our communities are healthy in good and bad times. My parents also taught me that entrepreneurship is vital to building a financially strong community. Today, I’m taking these lessons along with the motivation I get from my patients into my first business venture.

I launched my telemedicine company Revolutionary Health and Wellness PLLC in August to provide a support system to people wrestling with obesity and weight-related illnesses. Although we’re virtually-based, personal relationships and professional collaboration are indeed the cornerstone of my company. Along with my associates, I offer clients opportunities to work with licensed physicians to create personalized wellness and weight loss plans, guidance, and support groups.

I’m extremely proud of taking my business from an idea to reality. This process has taken multiple years but it’s been rewarding. I’m grateful for this opportunity to provide more people with the connections, encouragement, and expertise they need to reach their optimal wellness goals.

If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?

If I had the ability to go back in time, I would absolutely choose the same profession again. When I was younger I thought that I would follow in my father’s footsteps and practice psychiatry. However, I realized quickly that this wasn’t my path when I did a practice rotation in medical school. I ended up feeling more fulfilled during my rotation in family medicine which provides you with a variety of experiences. In family medicine, you get to treat everybody and honestly it includes a lot of psychiatry.

Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?

I think what’s most helpful to anyone working in the medical field is being what I call “the prototype” of the lifestyle you want your patients to live. I’ve had patients tell me over the years that they appreciate that I am also focused on my own health. As physicians, we can’t tell people “do what I say; not as I do.”
