We recently connected with Rebecca Burkhart and have shared our conversation below.
Rebecca, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
My top four suggestions on what it takes to be successful: set goals, never be afraid to ask for help or collaborate, “make the time”, and stay strong even in times of doubt.
If you want to accomplish something in life, you need to have a goal with measurable steps to follow and track. It’s easy to say: “I want xyz”, but if you don’t have a plan to reach that want or desire, then how do you plan on obtaining your goal? Make sure your steps are realistic, measurable, and set to specific timeframes. Some individuals will want to be a social media influencer, but if you must have a plan of action or schedule to keep your audience hooked.
Never be afraid to ask for help or assistance. If you want to be a content creator, you need to remember that engagement and helping other content creators become successful, only works in your benefit. Engagement and collaborating with other similar-minded and goal set individuals can help you reach your goals and get you to where you want to be.
A lot of individuals say the phrase: “I don’t have time”. If you want to obtain a goal in life, you must make the time in your schedule. We are given 24 hours in the day to re-arrange and/or prioritize your time. Rather than saying “I don’t have time”, analyze your schedule and see how you can make your goals a true possibility.
It is easy to doubt yourself, compare yourself to others, and take potential negative comments to heart. As a content creator, I deal with countless comments and messages that are hateful or disrespectful. That’s te unfortunate side of being on social media. If you take those words to heart, you can lose sight of your dreams and goals. Don’t let the negative words from others impact who you are and what you are trying to achieve.
My personal motto: “Thinks Usually Work Out Sometimes”. Stay positive, keep your goals at the top of your mind, and never be afraid to ask for assistance.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Rebecca Burkhart and I am a 28 year old global content creator based out of Kansas City, Missouri, USA. I work fulltime in software as a project manager, which allows me to travel and explore the United States and Canada. When I was attending the University of Missouri, I went on two global brigades in Panama, studied abroad in Prague, and interned in Seattle and Chicago. These travels in college sparked a love for seeing the world. I have now been to 18 countries and 47 states, several of these countries and states I have been to a handful of times. I started posting travel related content in 2019 and my account didn’t “take off” until Instagram Reels were introduced.
I create travel content to inspire others to explore the world. I also create content for businesses, tours, and restaurants around the globe, but primarily in Kansas City. I am proud of the content that I create and the engagement that is generated for the business I am working with. I am most proud of the places I have been and seen: sat on the edge of the pyramids in Egypt, ate lava cooked pizza on a volcano in Guatemala, explored temples in Thailand, hiked Angels Landing and several other trails in the United States, and more. Travel allows you to learn about other cultures, try foods you’d never authentically experience in your hometown, and meet new friends in other countries.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
There are two major rewarding aspects of being a content creator: hearing online friends telling you that they traveled to my recommended destination and had a phenomenal time, along with businesses showing enthusiasm for my work and the traffic that was generated because of my posts.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I am from a small farm town in the middle of Missouri. It can be very difficult for some friends and family to understand why I do what I do. I’ve heard some of the following: “all you do is post all day”, “I don’t know how you have the time to post videos..”, “why do you post pictures of food and rocks all the time”, and so on. The truth of the matter is that there IS money in content creation. If you have the goal to make an income from posting content, then I would 110% recommend following that dream. You may not have everyone on your side. You may deal with hateful comments from strangers on the internet. You may be up late at night trying to get the content created for the next day. Never give up on your dreams….because “things usually work out sometimes”.
