Hi A Beautiful Dae, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.

My song “Damsel in Distress” is one of the most meaningful projects I have worked on thus far. Not many people know, but I’ve lived a very challenging life due to medical illness and childhood trauma. Once upon a time, A Beautiful Dae fell in love and got married, expecting a happily ever after, but ending in disaster instead. The events that led up to my divorce left me shattered and at the lowest, I had ever been in life. The self-hatred was overwhelming. I remember crying to my mother and best friend about how all the fairy tales and Disney movies lied to me and gave me all this false hope. It was in the midst of my breakdown that the lyrics began to form. The song started as a way to let my heart grieve and became an encouraging love letter to my inner child. I didn’t even plan to release the song because of how painful it was to sing it. But after sharing it with a few friends, they convinced me, and now it’s one of my most requested songs. So many people have reached out to me to express how much they resonate with the lyrics and how it has encouraged them to keep moving. It brings me incredible joy to know that something so beautiful, healing, and inspiring came from that pain. Makes it all worth it for me.

A Beautiful Dae, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

I am a young woman born in Illinois but raised in Kansas, and a little bit of everywhere. My dad was active duty military for most of my childhood, so we moved a bit. I started off humming, and it eventually grew to singing. The death of a close family sparked the origin story of my songwriting adventure. I would take popular songs, locate an instrumental, and then rewrite the lyrics to fit an entirely different topic. My little cousin, who is now an artist himself and goes by Lil Gizmo, gave me a beat he produced, and I wrote and recorded one of my first original songs. My parents, being the great support system they are, encouraged me to pursue music, and that’s what I spent the years doing. I attended Full Sail University, went through vocal training with Amanda Hunt’s Brave Voices Academy, completed a mentorship with Roxie Francis at IHMV (I Heart My Voice), and went through a songwriting course through Full Circle Music as well. My latest risk was moving here to LA to immerse myself completely into the music scene. I have loved every moment of it and have grown leaps and bounds in only a year of being here. I perform at local venues and open mics, have been collaborating with amazingly talented souls, have grown my fanbase live and virtually, and am now working on releasing my first EP.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?

Honestly, the biggest support would be to pay artists and creatives for their talents. In other industries, people are paid for their talents, whereas in music, you pay to display your talent. A lot of time, energy, and sacrifice goes into a lot of what we do. We deserve to be compensated for our efforts.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?

The drive behind my creative journey is extremely personal. For far too long, I sacrificed my goals, dreams, and happiness for the sake of others. To the point I completely lost who I was. Creating and sharing my music has been healing me in so many different ways. It has led me on a path of discovering not only what makes me happy but who I am. This beautiful, painful, messy, exciting journey has changed my perspective on life and how I approach my art. The greatest thing of all is how, in the process of my healing, I am helping others heal as well. That makes it all worth it.
