We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Apex Laurent a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Apex , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
A lesson I’ve learned in my years as a Host/Public Speaker is that “Mischaracterization” is more often the creatives own ego creating a problem, it’s not necessarily something to blame on the audience. Early in my career, I went viral for dance videos and making funny tweets that were relatable and lighthearted with a touch of toxic (perfect for my then college aged, young adult/late teens audience).
As I got into more professional spaces with my platforms also growing, I used to resent when people would put me in a box based on my social media presence ie: “The dancing guy”, “R&B Host”, “Hype Man” etc. These conclusive titles placed on me used to bother me because I viewed what I was doing with much more depth then the surface layer of what was being consumed by viewers. I was trying to push a narrative of freedom, expression, autonomy, and self development and hoped my viewers would be able to interpret that by reading between the lines of my attention baiting content. Granted, I was blessed with opportunities to create meaningful connections during this era of my career and met many people who did see past the surface and appreciated the things I was representing.
It wasn’t until I deep dived into my own intentionality and removed my ego from the content that I was able to adapt and grow past this resentment I was carrying towards my audience. I asked myself, “How can I be mad about assumptions made about me or my brand if they are only basing these assumptions off of content I myself, created?”
is the audience the problem? is my content the problem? what do I want to be seen as and what do I want to give?
These questions were heavy and I wrestled with them extensively. As a young creative, I rejected the idea of a “niche” because I thought working in freedom was liberating. In reality, learning how to systemize your creativity is how you can gain better control of the narrative you want your audience to understand and receive. Once you have a clear understanding of what you want to give, who you’re speaking to, and what you want them to receive, its a lot harder to blame the audience for mischaracterizing you. You’re doing all you can to control your narrative, how you are received is out of your control. My frustration wasn’t coming from mischaracterization, it was from the disconnect of miscommunication between me, my content/art & the audience.
Sometimes the image of the audience we want in our heads and the reality of the audience we speak to the most don’t exactly mirror each other. Coming to terms and understanding that and putting the effort in to define your target audience, and your intended message will allow for much easier streamlining in your ability to produce your art.

Apex , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Apex Laurent, a live event host and public speaker with a passion for helping others master communication, build confidence, and actualize their potential. Being the first generation of my family born in America & growing up in an immigrant Congolese household, I developed a deep appreciation for storytelling and communication, blending that with my love for dancing and public speaking.
My journey started with talent shows and school events, and it’s grown into a career where I now host major concerts, like RNB ONLY, and public speaking engagements leading crowds of 5,000+ with high energy and connection. Along the way, I’ve turned my experiences into teaching moments—showing people how to speak with confidence, lead with authority, and tell stories that inspire action. I specialize in using scientifically-backed methods like the confidence-competence loop and visualization to help clients achieve measurable growth, amplifiying their productivity and boosting their public speaking confidence.
What sets me apart is my ability to connect with a wide range of audiences—whether it’s a concert crowd, a corporate setting, or through my YouTube channel, where I share tools to help people become better leaders, storytellers, and speakers. I’ve honed these skills from both personal experience and my diverse cultural background, making me a versatile and dynamic communicator.
The work I do is all about creating real transformation. I don’t just help people talk better—I help them unlock their voice and lead with purpose, whether they’re entrepreneurs, creatives, or young professionals. My biggest reward is seeing people go from hesitant to owning their space and becoming leaders in their field.
If you want to collaborate, book me as a host, or need coaching to level up your communication and storytelling, you can find me on socials @ApexLaurent, or email me at ApexLaurentMC@gmail.com. Let’s take your confidence, leadership, and communication to the next level.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
One thing non-creatives might struggle to understand about my journey is that creativity isn’t just about talent or a flash of inspiration—it’s about consistency, discipline, and constantly challenging yourself. People often think that being creative is easy or spontaneous, but they don’t see the behind-the-scenes work: the countless failures, the constant refining, and the grit it takes to stay true to your vision when no one else sees it yet. Creativity is a muscle—you’ve got to train it every day. It’s about showing up, doing the work, and trusting the process, even when it’s messy. The discipline required to do this is immense and it takes time for creatives to learn that although their whole life has been about not fitting into a box and creating their own box, its important to create systems of operations for the creative output to truly flourish. These internal battles are things non-creatives may not consider as creatives often just seem “free”. No matter how “free” things seem in this life, The question always remains “at what cost?”

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission isn’t just about teaching people how to speak—it’s about helping them unlock their full potential through authentic communication. My late father instilled in me the power of speaking with integrity and using your voice to connect with others, and that’s something I carry forward in everything I do. Traveling the world showed me how important it is to be genuine in communication—it transcends cultures and connects people on a deeper level. But it’s not just about talking; it’s about learning and sharing lessons along the way.
I’ve learned that it’s never too late to start telling your story. Whether you’re just starting out or you’re well into your journey, your experiences and the lessons you’ve gained can have a huge impact on others. Communication is a skill you can always improve on, and the more you grow and share those insights, the more powerful your voice becomes. I’m dedicated to helping people not just speak, but transform their communication into leadership, so they can influence others and create real change.
This mission is especially important when it comes to inspiring young people. I want them to understand that their voice can be a tool for leadership, and that learning from their own journey is just as crucial as the act of speaking. The best communicators are always students of their own experiences, using what they’ve learned to guide, inspire, and empower others. That’s the foundation of leadership—growing, learning, and sharing those lessons to uplift others.
Ultimately, my work is about real transformation. I help people find their voice, learn from their story, and lead with purpose. When you combine communication with the wisdom of your own experiences, you don’t just elevate yourself—you elevate everyone around you. That’s the legacy I want to leave: empowering others to communicate and lead in a way that creates lasting, meaningful impact.
