We were lucky to catch up with Rebecca May recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Rebecca thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you tell us about a time where you or your team really helped a customer get an amazing result?
One of my biggest customer success stories is that I had clients who were looking for a home in Palm Springs who lived remotely. After doing several videos of different properties, my clients came out to see one of the homes and made an amazing offer. Unfortunately, the seller chose another offer, and my clients were devastated. I reached out to the listing agent daily to see how the other escrow was going. My clients decided to come out and look at other properties and on the morning we were going out to look, the listing agent of the property reached out to say that the buyer that was in escrow on the property cancelled. My clients got the home and they were absolutely ecstatic. We are very dear friends to this day and they have given me several referrals.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a realtor in the greater Palm Springs area. I got into the business because I was broke and couldn’t pay my bills. My husband encouraged me to get my license. I feel as though what sets me apart from my peers is my willingness to go the extra mile for my clients. I am most proud of how many people I have been able to help!

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I feel as though I have built my reputation by working extremely hard to be the best I can possibly be in the business. I’m a “yes” person and I always go the extra mile for my clients. Client satisfaction is everything to me! One thing I pride myself on is my response time. I try to get back to people immediately. I also think I set myself apart by building strong relationships with my clients, and that has led to many referrals. I try to respect the process and not think about the outcome. I truly care about people and their happiness and I believe that has been a big secret to my success. I am a perfectionist and my listings reflect that. Some agents use iphone pictures in their listings. I would never do that. I believe you have to spend money to make money so I invest in gorgeous photos and videos for all of my listings. I treat a $200,000 dollar listing exactly the same way as I treat a million dollar listing.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I had a business selling clothing that I imported from India and sold at the farmers markets all over San Diego for ten years and when I moved to Palm Springs, I was working in retail and although I was the top sales person out of 25 stores, I was living in a studio apartment with my three dogs and could not afford to eat. When I met my husband, he encouraged me to get my real estate license. I had never even bought a house before I started selling them! My husband let me put all of my business expenses on his credit card and I paid him back. It took me ten months to sell a house! My biggest challenge was my mindset. I found myself constantly down and feeling negative. At one point, one of my family members made an offer on a house for $1.7 million dollars cash. They backed out of the deal and I was completely heartbroken and cried for a month! Another time, I was in escrow on two properties totalling $2.7 million dollars and the buyer produced fake bank statements to show proof of funds to write the offers. I couldn’t get out of bed for a month. Now, bad things happen all the time, but I have a rule that I only allow myself five minutes to be upset about it. I haven’t added it up lately, but I’ve sold over fifty million dollars in real estate in the past seven years!
