We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rektok Ross. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rektok below.
Hi Rektok, thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Leaving my lucrative law career was one of the biggest risks I’ve ever taken. I had been with the same firm since law school, starting as an intern and building a rewarding career alongside coworkers and clients I truly loved. But as much as I enjoyed the stability and success, I knew deep down that my passion lay in storytelling—writing books and creating films. Just before I turned 40, after careful planning with career coaches and lots of soul-searching, I made the leap into a full-time creative career. It was a huge risk, but it’s led me to become a bestselling author, screenwriter, and producer, and I’ve never looked back

Rektok, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a trial attorney turned full-time author, screenwriter, and producer, having spent over a decade practicing law before following my true passion—storytelling. As an avid reader since childhood, I write the kind of books I love to escape into: exciting, fast-paced thrillers with strong female leads, swoon-worthy romance, and life-or-death stakes. My standalone thriller series includes “Ski Weekend”, a snowy survival thriller currently being adapted into a movie, “Summer Rental”, which is a psychological thriller best described as “Mean Girls” meets “Scream,” and Spring Harvest, a vampire action thriller perfect for fans of “The Vampire Diaries.” I love thriller horror but I’m also a huge fan of romance and write contemporary romance and romantasy. I have a contemporary young adult sports romance called “Prodigal” that readers seem to really love.
I’m currently focused on expanding my business with more books, book-to-movie adaptations, audiobooks, translations, and a strong social media presence to connect with readers worldwide. What sets my work apart is the blend of high stakes, complex characters, emotional depth, and social commentary, and I’m most proud of creating stories that not only entertain but stay with readers long after they’ve turned the last page.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When my debut thriller novel, “Ski Weekend”, was released during the pandemic, I faced an uphill battle. As a small, unknown author, it was nearly impossible to get bookstores to partner with me for events—resources were strained, and in-person gatherings were still limited. But I didn’t let that stop me. Instead, I worked tirelessly, reaching out to bookstores across the country, building relationships, and finding creative ways to connect with readers. My persistence paid off, and I was able to organize a cross-country book release tour, traveling to multiple cities to host events and meet readers in person. It was a challenge, but it taught me the power of resilience and the importance of pushing through even when the odds seem stacked against you.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
One resource I wish I had discovered earlier in my creative journey is the wealth of Facebook groups for both readers and writers. These communities have been invaluable for connecting directly with readers to learn what they love about my books and the kinds of stories they’re drawn to. It’s an incredible opportunity to engage with your audience in a meaningful way and build genuine relationships. On the writer side, the Facebook groups for authors have been equally important. These groups provide a supportive space to learn from fellow authors, share experiences, and offer advice—something that’s especially crucial for indie authors like myself, who are building their own business and often need a sense of community. It’s a place to both give and receive help, and that collaboration has been key to my growth as a writer and entrepreneur.
