We were lucky to catch up with Kris Franklin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kris , appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
One of the most meaningful projects I’ve worked on is the drop we’re having on 10-18-24—MOOD LA’s “HOMAGE TO HOME” collection. This collection is special because it’s not just about fashion; it’s a tribute to Detroit, a city that shaped me as a designer and a person.
The story behind this drop is rooted in honoring where I come from. Detroit has a unique energy—it’s gritty, resilient, and filled with a sense of community and pride that’s often misunderstood by outsiders. Growing up there, I witnessed both the struggles and the beauty that define the city, from its industrial backbone to its creative spirit. It’s a place that taught me the value of hard work, perseverance, and never forgetting where you come from.
When I started MOOD LA, I wanted to bring some of that Detroit essence into the brand, but this collection—this is the moment where it all comes full circle. The “HOMAGE TO HOME” collection embodies the love I have for my hometown, with pieces that reflect its toughness and soul. The deep industrial tones, leathers, and vibrant accents symbolize both the strength and vibrant spirit of the city. Every detail in this drop is carefully considered, from the fabrics to the color palette, as a way to honor Detroit’s culture and history.
This project is meaningful to me because it feels like giving back to the place that gave me everything. It’s a way to show respect, to tell the world that Detroit is more than its reputation, and to create something that reflects both the city’s rawness and its beauty. It’s personal, it’s a tribute, and it’s a celebration of home.

Kris , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Kris Franklin, the designer behind MOOD LA. I’ve always been into fashion, even as a kid, but I was also an athlete for much of my life. After graduating from Grambling State University with a business degree, I knew I wanted to follow my passion for fashion. So, I took a leap, moved to LA, and started MOOD LA.
At MOOD LA, we create clothing that blends streetwear and contemporary with meaningful stories, like our upcoming “HOMAGE TO HOME” collection, which pays tribute to my roots in Detroit. I focus on making pieces that resonate on a deeper level, not just something to wear but something with purpose.
What sets us apart is that our collections are personal and reflect my journey. I’m most proud of building this brand from the ground up, staying true to my vision, and creating designs that inspire people to express who they are.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to be successful enough to create opportunities for kids who look like me and have an interest in fashion. I want to open doors for others at an early age, giving them access to resources and mentorship that I didn’t have when I started. It’s about more than just making clothes—it’s about paving the way for future generations to follow their passions and succeed.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
One book that’s had a big impact on my entrepreneurial mindset is “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho. It’s all about pursuing your dreams and recognizing that the journey itself holds value. Another is “Shoe Dog” by Phil Knight, which gives a raw look at the challenges of building Nike and shows what persistence looks like. I also take a lot from motivational videos and interviews with successful entrepreneurs like Nipsey Hussle and Jay-Z, who emphasize ownership, hustle, and staying true to your vision while navigating the ups and downs. These resources keep me focused and hungry for success.
