We recently connected with Quiana Lewis and have shared our conversation below.
Quiana , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
The moment I knew I wanted to pursue a creative path professionally was deeply tied to my mom’s passing in 2021. Growing up in a house full of creativity, she was the forefront of everything artistic. Whether it was the way she decorated the house, the projects she encouraged us to do, or the music she played, art and creativity were the heartbeat of our home. She nurtured that spirit in me from the start.
But when she passed, I was devastated. Everything I thought I knew about my life and my direction shifted, and it felt like I lost a part of myself too. I had to dig deep to remember what made me truly happy as a child, and it always came back to art—those moments when I was painting, sketching, or simply creating. It was in that raw space of grief that I realized I had to get back to the thing that made me happiest. Art became my way of connecting with her memory, and more than ever, I knew I had to pursue it professionally. It was no longer just a passion but a calling to honor the creativity she had instilled in me.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Quiana Lewis, a self-taught artist from Queens, New York, who taught myself oil painting and digital Procreate. I specialize in both mural paintings and live painting at events, where I love adding my unique flare to each piece. Whether I’m capturing the spirit of a person in a custom portrait or creating art live during performances, I aim to make every piece feel personal and impactful.
What truly sets me apart is my unshakable belief in my future success and the tenacity that drives me forward. I’m proud of my ability to continually push myself, overcome fear, and grow as an artist. My goal is to inspire others to follow their dreams, no matter the challenges they face.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Society can support artists by valuing the arts through increased funding for education, public art initiatives, and local markets and galleries. Investing in art projects and recognizing the importance of mental health can also help artists thrive. A thriving creative ecosystem requires a collective commitment to uplift and value artists’ contributions.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Yes, I wish I had known about online platforms and communities for artists to connect and receive feedback. Access to online courses for specific techniques and information on grants and funding opportunities would have also accelerated my growth and support in my creative journey.
