We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Desange Kuenihira a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Desange thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
Desange Kuenihira’s journey begins in the heart of the Congo, where, as a young girl, she was surrounded by a world that sought to define her future in the bleakest terms. With every word spoken to her, the message was clear: she was meant for a life of servitude, bound by the constraints of an arranged marriage and the poverty that loomed ahead. But deep within her, a flicker of defiance ignited—a belief that she was destined for more.
The backdrop of civil war forced her family to flee, leading them to a refugee camp in Uganda. There, amidst the chaos and uncertainty, Desange faced unimaginable hardships. Each day was a struggle for survival, not just against physical threats, but against the emotional scars that threatened to define her existence. Yet, in those harsh conditions, she discovered a glimmer of hope: education. It was in the crumbling walls of makeshift classrooms that she found her escape route—a chance to transform her life and break free from the cycle of despair.
Arriving in America brought its own challenges, including a profound culture shock as she navigated life with foster families. There were moments of loneliness and confusion, yet every challenge fueled her resolve. Desange realized that her experiences were not just hardships; they were lessons that would shape her into a resilient advocate for change. Each setback only deepened her commitment to her education and her desire to empower others facing similar struggles.
With her college graduation came a profound realization: she was not just a survivor; she was a beacon of hope for others. Inspired by the kindness she received throughout her journey, Desange decided to pay it forward. This is how the idea for her nonprofit, UnDEfeated, was born—a mission to uplift women and girls in Uganda, providing them with the tools and opportunities she had fought so hard to attain.
Desange’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, education, and community. It’s a powerful reminder that no matter how insurmountable the odds may seem, there is always a path forward. Through UnDEfeated, she not only aims to transform lives but also to inspire a movement where every girl knows she is worthy of a future filled with possibilities. This venture is not just a business; it’s a calling, rooted in the belief that when we uplift one another, we all rise.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Desange Kuenihira, the founder of UnDEfeated, a nonprofit organization dedicated to uplifting Uganda’s most vulnerable populations, particularly underprivileged youth and single working mothers. My journey has been deeply shaped by my own experiences of hardship and resilience, which ignited my passion for education and empowerment.
Having fled the civil war in the Congo and endured the challenges of life in a refugee camp, I came to understand the profound impact that education can have on one’s life. It became my escape route and ultimately my pathway to a brighter future. When I arrived in the United States, I recognized that my journey wasn’t just about my own success; it was about creating opportunities for others facing similar struggles.
UnDEfeated was born out of this vision. We focus on enhancing education for underprivileged youth, offering scholarships, mentorship programs, and vocational training. We also provide essential support for families and single working mothers, recognizing the unique challenges they face, particularly in the context of abandonment and scarcity. Our mission is to break the cycle of extreme poverty and reduce child marriage, fostering a brighter future for all.
What sets UnDEfeated apart is our holistic approach. We don’t just focus on academic achievement; we address the underlying social and economic factors that contribute to poverty and gender inequality. Our programs are designed to empower individuals and families, equipping them with the tools they need to thrive. This includes life skills training, mental health support, and community-building initiatives that promote resilience and self-sufficiency.
I am incredibly proud of the impact we’ve made thus far. Watching young girls and boys transform into confident leaders and advocates for their communities is a constant reminder of why we do this work. Each success story reinforces our belief in the power of education and the strength of community support.
For potential clients, followers, and fans, I want you to know that UnDEfeated is more than just a nonprofit; it’s a movement dedicated to systemic change. We believe that every child deserves a chance to succeed and that empowering women is essential for the health of families and communities. Your support can make a significant difference—whether through volunteering, donations, or spreading the word. Together, we can uplift the most vulnerable and foster a future filled with hope and opportunity. Thank you for being part of this journey with us!

Have you ever had to pivot?
Absolutely! One significant moment for me came during the early days of launching UnDEfeated. I had envisioned a straightforward approach: providing scholarships and educational resources directly to underprivileged youth. However, as I began to implement these programs, I quickly realized that the challenges faced by these communities were far more complex than I had anticipated.
While many children were eager to learn, they were often hindered by factors like food insecurity, lack of parental support, and the pressure to contribute to household income. Many single mothers were struggling to make ends meet, often resorting to decisions like sending their daughters into early marriages to alleviate financial burdens.
This insight was a pivotal moment for me. I understood that simply providing educational resources wasn’t enough; we needed to adopt a more holistic approach that addressed the root causes of poverty and gender inequality. So, I pivoted our strategy to include not only educational support but also programs aimed at empowering families and single mothers. We introduced vocational training for mothers, financial literacy workshops, and community support groups to help create a sustainable environment for learning and growth.
This shift was not easy. It required a reevaluation of our resources, outreach efforts, and partnerships. However, the impact was profound. We saw a significant increase in the number of children who were able to attend school regularly, as well as improvements in family dynamics and overall community resilience.
This experience taught me the importance of flexibility and listening to the needs of the community. It reinforced my belief that true empowerment comes from understanding the whole picture. This pivot not only enhanced the effectiveness of our programs but also deepened my commitment to our mission. It was a challenging yet transformative experience that continues to shape our work at UnDEfeated today.
