Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kellie Taylor. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
KELLIE, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I haven’t always done photography full time. I was raised by an older generation, one that firmly believed you needed a job, a ‘real’ job, whatever that is…so that’s what I did. I’ve worked retail, food service, non-profit, those people that called you during diner to ask you about your most recent service call, grocery – EVERYTHING.
I. Was. Never. Happy.
When I finally made the leap to self-employment I was working for a hospital, processing insurance claims, and doing sessions on days off. There were times I couldn’t do the work I wanted to do because of the work I HAD to do. That and the exhaustion of the desk job and office politics led me to leap.
I took a bet on myself, left the job and haven’t looked back since.
KELLIE, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a journalistic photographer that specializes in weddings. However, I do have many couples that keep me and I can’t wait to tell their stories as their families grow. I find it easy to connect to people from behind the lens and definitely use that to my advantage. I think weddings are my favorite because every single day is like a new ROM-COM. I have so many stories I could fill books.
I’ve always thought that life happens in the details…like, when someone replies to your text instantly or when you finally find the comfortable sleeping position. It’s going to bed knowing that you can sleep in as long as you want, finding money in a pocket, a compliment from a stranger…that moment when the laugh is funnier than the joke, or you see your food coming in a restaurant…the big picture is the goal…but, life happens in the details.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of what I do is getting to be part of something so special. Weddings are the biggest day in the lives of at least two of the people in the room and they let me be there. PAID ME TO BE THERE. Then they go off and start their families and sometimes, because of that wedding day, they let me meet their babies and I get to watch them all grow.
I get to give them the still shots of their core memories.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
There are two solid sources for new clients. The first one is a given; word of mouth. A happy client is a client that is going to tell their entire world about you. Then it spreads. I love word-of-mouth clients!
OK- the second one- look out for the all-inclusive venues. Now, not all are worth working for, don’t settle. But for me Boss Wedding Venues has been a huge supply of new clients. How it all operates is a whole different conversation but the short of it is, making it on to a preferred vendors list for local-to-you venues is a great source.
