We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lauren Nelson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lauren, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I’ve been lucky enough to be creative and use that creative talent in a variety of aspects in my life. My experience and background of creative social media has allowed me to use these talents to help a vast variety of non-profit organizations. There are so many ways in which the power of social media can positively impact and dramatically change the way a non-profit operates.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have been digitally creating content in a variety of formats now since 2010. I have worked for myself, consulted for others, created content for a variety of entities as well as managed multiple businesses’ social media accounts.
I’m most proud of how I’ve used my skills and wide range of experience to help non-profits utilize social media to their advantage. I’ve volunteered with my children’s elementary school PTO for 3 years now and been able to increase corporate sponsorships by providing an ROI on their sponsorship through social media. I’ve also helped the PTO utilize social media to partner with local businesses to facilitate trades for services and goods. Besides the PTO I’ve also put my social media skills to use for other non-profits such as Dragon Youth Football, The Colonel Foundation and more.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The power of social media when used properly is extraordinary and I really think it intimidates a lot of people. Also, I know that especially for non-profits it’s hard to find the time to dedicate to social media. I would love to be able to provide some sort of online course or e-book some day that could help make social media approachable and successful for all non-profits.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Creativity is what drives me in everything I do. I am always thinking, how can I be different and unique. I’m immediately turned off by any trend if I can see it getting too popular. I like to be ahead of the game and one of the first to do something some way. Creativity has always been what I consider my super power. I’m always flattered when people ask for my opinion on things where I can exercise my creative muscles. Creativity is fun and challenging. One of my favorite things now about creativity is when I can be creative with my kids. I love to see them be creative and love to collaborate together. They’re teaching me all new ways to think outside the box and helping me see things with a set of fresh eyes.
