We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sue Moerder a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sue, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I just created a Skull Art room at Otherworld Philly – it was an incredible experience. I was able to work around a lot of talented Artists from Philly and Ohio, and was able to create a space that lots of people can enjoy. I’ve never done a project that scale – it was a lot of hard work, but extremely rewarding!
I was also in Philly Fashion week a couple times and a bunch of other fashion shows with my brand Moerder Chains. I got to see my art/fashions on stunning models in very high end venues and experience the thrill of the runway. My fashions have also been in professional photo shoots and on a few celebrities, which is always exciting.

Sue, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started out my career in Advertising. As a Graphic Designer / Art Director for a couple decades, then ended up in Tattooing for another couple of decades. I owned and operated my own shop – Moerder Tattoos and Gallery (in Hammonton, NJ for 9 of those years. I sold my shop 4 years ago and my daughter and I moved back to Philadelphia, where I am making my Art, making my Chain Outfits and running an Artist Group called “philacitywithart”, where I curate events and gallery shows in the city for free, to help other Artists.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me – my Art is like air… it’s a necessity and I can’t imagine living without it. I’ve always been an Artist so I don’t really view it as something that I’m rewarded for. It’s always nice to see people’s reactions though.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I would love to do more installations – I have so many ideas for creating unique spaces.
My Art is a big treasure hunt ending in a beautiful puzzle, problem solving and changing course. I look for those perfect elements – than piece together metal and bone, with the added element of light. It’s a fun balancing act.
