We recently connected with Miranda Malone and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Miranda thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
A defining moment in my professional career was deeply intertwined with my personal journey as a motherless daughter. My mom died in a car accident when I was just 5 months old, and although I wasn’t old enough to consciously remember her, the impact of her absence shaped me in profound ways. For much of my life, I unknowingly carried the grief of that loss, but it wasn’t until I became a mother myself that I truly began to understand its weight and significance.
My career began with a passion for helping people, which led me into behavioral health and psychotherapy. However, it was through my own journey of processing grief—especially as I navigated motherhood without my own mother—that I realized how vital it was to lean into grief, rather than away from it. This realization changed the trajectory of my career and my life.
I started my practice, New Moon Therapy, in April 2022 and founded the Milwaukee Motherless Collective in December 2023, a social organization for women who have lost their mothers to death. It became a space where women could come together, share their stories, and support each other through the complexities of grief. This work inspired me to further specialize as a holistic grief therapist, specializing in working with motherless daughters.
In my practice, I incorporate unique therapeutic methods like Brainspotting and Hypnotherapy, which allow women to connect with their grief in profound, healing ways. My mission is to help them collaborate with their grief, transforming it into a source of strength and meaning. By doing this work, I’ve seen how women can live a purposeful and fulfilling life, even after enduring such deep loss. The wisdom I’ve gained is that grief, when acknowledged and processed, can be a powerful teacher and guide in creating a life of resilience and purpose.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a holistic grief therapist specializing in supporting motherless daughters through their grief journey. My personal story is at the heart of my work. I lost my mom in a car accident when I was just five months old, an experience that profoundly shaped my life and career path. Growing up without a mother, I felt the weight of her absence in all the pivotal moments of my life. As I became a mother myself, I felt the impact of my loss even more intensely, and it deepened my understanding of the complexities of mother loss. This personal journey inspired me to pursue a career in social work, eventually transitioning into behavioral health and psychotherapy.
Through my own grief processing and becoming a mom, I learned how important it is to lean into grief, not away from it. This understanding led me to found the Milwaukee Motherless Collective, a social organization specifically for women who have lost their mothers. It’s a space where women can connect, share their experiences, and find a sense of community.
Today, my practice, New Moon Therapy, focuses on helping women who have lost their mothers find healing and a renewed sense of purpose. I offer a range of services, including Brainspotting and Hypnotherapy, to help clients navigate their grief in unique, profound ways. My approach is holistic, blending traditional therapeutic techniques with spiritual and alternative methods that allow clients to connect deeply with their grief. I believe in collaborating with grief rather than resisting it, helping women create a new relationship with their loss that brings meaning and healing.
What sets me apart is my personal understanding of mother loss and the deep empathy and connection I bring to my work. I’ve walked this path, and I know how isolating and painful it can be. My clients often feel seen, heard, and validated in ways they haven’t experienced before. I work closely with them to help process their grief and create a life that feels aligned, fulfilling, and purposeful, even after such a significant loss.
I am most proud of the community I’ve built and the women I’ve had the honor of supporting. My work is about more than just therapy; it is true soul alignment and it’s about creating safe, healing spaces where motherless daughters can thrive. I want potential clients and followers to know that I am dedicated to providing compassionate, transformative care, blending both traditional and alternative therapies, to help them live fully and meaningfully beyond their grief.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
What helped me build my reputation within my market is the combination of my personal experience and my specialized approach to grief therapy. Being a motherless daughter myself, I deeply understand the unique pain and complexities that come with this loss. This lived experience allows me to connect with my clients in an authentic and empathetic way that they often don’t find elsewhere.
Founding the Milwaukee Motherless Collective helped solidify my reputation as a leader and advocate in this area. This initiative not only provided support but also allowed me to network and build relationships with women in the community, further establishing my credibility.
By providing innovative approaches in my practice, this helps differentiate my services and attract clients who are seeking more than just traditional talk therapy. By offering a blend of spiritual, emotional, and therapeutic support, I’m able to provide a comprehensive, personalized experience for my clients.
Lastly, I share my journey and insights openly on social media as @themotherlosstherapist giving people an inside look at my philosophy and methods. This transparency and willingness to engage with my audience build trust and credibility, making me a go-to resource for those navigating mother loss.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Other than training and knowledge, I believe that empathy, authenticity, and personal experience are most helpful for succeeding in my field of holistic grief therapy. Having personally navigated the profound loss of my mother at such a young age, I bring a deep understanding and compassion to my work that textbooks alone can’t provide. This lived experience allows me to connect with my clients on a meaningful level, creating a safe space where they feel truly seen and heard.
Building genuine relationships is crucial. Clients need to trust that you not only have the expertise but also the heartfelt commitment to support them through their healing journey. Active listening, patience, and the ability to hold space for complex emotions without judgment are essential skills that go beyond formal education.
Additionally, being adaptable and open to integrating various therapeutic modalities—like Brainspotting and Hypnotherapy—helps address the unique needs of each individual. Passion for the work and a continuous dedication to personal growth also play significant roles. When clients see that you are genuinely invested in their well-being and are walking alongside them, it fosters a collaborative environment conducive to healing.
