We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jessica Powers. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jessica below.
Jessica, appreciate you joining us today. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you as a business owner?
Prior to being in Real Estate, most of my professional life was spent as a Paramedic and in the Service Industry.
While working in restaurants I dabbled in almost every role imaginable. I worked as a hostess, server, bartender, manager and even as a consultant for restaurant owners. This field taught me two important lessons – the importance of cross training and how to successfully interact with a variety of people. I use these skills in Real Estate on a daily basis. Understanding and successfully communicating with five different personality types in a day is a regular occurrence! My clients are all so different and so are the other agents I work with. Being flexible with different personalities is essential to being effective with and for my clients.
Have you ever heard of a Real Estate agent training alongside a Home Inspector? Or a Mortgage Broker? I have spent countless hours with inspectors, brokers, appraisers, etc. so that I can understand their side of this world. This experience allows me to navigate the “hairy deals” with ease and prepare my clients for even the most unlikely of possible sceanorios.
When I started working in EMS, I was told that I was “too kind” or “not tough enough”. I have a pretty sunny disposition and rarely do I let something shade me, and I refused to let those hard years callous me. Rather, I spent those years learning that it is okay to give your kindness to others. It is okay to support others. And it is okay to be as nurturing as you naturally are. Because in the end, everyone who receives that kindness will be thankful. Offering that kindness and nurturing relationships is the premise of Nurturing Homes. It is engrained in everything we do.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I was raised in Real Estate. Currently my mother, brother, Aunt and Cousin are all practicing agents. They all hold amazing accolades and I have been beyond fortunate to learn from them through the years.
Even with so many agents in my family, I originally followed my own path of becoming a Paramedic and I absolutely loved it. However, in 2019 I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and I had to step back from working in the medical field while undergoing Chemotherapy Treatment. During that process, I began to consider obtaining my Real Estate license. I decided to go for it and received my license first in North Carolina (where I lived at the time) and then in Michigan when I moved back to my hometown.
In my early days in the real estate field I felt as though I had lost my outlet to care for other people. That was an extremely important part of me being a Paramedic and I missed it. In an attempt to recover this part of myself, I created Nurturing Homes. I built a company where I am able to care for my clients in every outlet they need. There truly is no limit to the extent of work I will do for my clients. For example, I have helped clean my clients homes, I have done minor home repairs, and I have played chauffeur and babysitter. If I have the ability to do it, I will. And if I don’t, I will help them find the perfect contractor who can.
When working with sellers, Nurturing Homes offers a deep clean of the home, staging, professional photography and videography, overseeing showings, hosting Open Houses and Broker Opens, and event facilitating your move to your new home.
When working with buyers, Nurturing Homes offers moving assistance, setting up your new utilities, helping with document transfers, overseeing inspections, and any thing else that comes up in the search process.
So truly, our clients – whether sellers or buyers – only have to do the absolute bare minimum throughout the buying or selling process. Our goal is to decrease stress as much as we can so that everyone can enjoy the process as much as possible.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Obviously what Nurturing Homes offers is extremely atypical in Real Estate. Since day one I have been told that I couldn’t do this, or that I shouldn’t. I’ve simply had agents tell me that it isn’t necessary and that I “shouldn’t do things that are the clients responsibility.”
… I don’t like being told I can’t do something.
So, every time I hear that, it just reminds me that I am staying true to myself and that the need for empathy is absolutely necessary in Real Estate.
If you have multiple revenue streams in your business, would you mind opening up about what those streams are and how they fit together?
Currently I feel like we are in a cocoon phase. We have so much on the horizon!!!
Recently I was awarded the position of Career Specialist for Michigan with Key Realty. My purpose is to help agents succeed in this world and be the best agent they can be. I can’t even begin to explain how thankful I am for this opportunity.
Another big adventure for Nurturing Homes is our expansion to having a department for remodeling and light construction as well as a residential cleaning department. Once we have those departments off the ground, we truly will be able to care for all home-related needs under one roof (pun intended).
