We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Darine Benamara. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Darine below.
Darine , appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
For years, I chased flawless skin, pouring time, energy, and way too much money into a 12-step skincare routine, but nothing seemed to work. I’d dealt with hyperpigmentation, dryness, and sensitivity that seemed to get worse no matter what I tried. I think so many women can relate to that feeling—following every new trend, only to feel let down when our skin doesn’t transform overnight. My journey with skincare, like many of us, was filled with frustration and disappointment, especially after using a harsh acne treatment in my 20s that left my skin even more fragile.
My turning point came during one of my trips to Africa when stumbled upon the Baobab tree. I was fascinated by the idea that this tree, which can withstand the toughest conditions, could hold the key to healing my skin. As I learned more about the Baobab, I felt a connection—not just to the tree’s resilience, but to the generations of women who have used this powerful ingredient for centuries. It was as if I’d finally found a solution that respected both my skin and nature.
I took that inspiration and created a serum that would simplify my skincare routine and give me the results I’d always wanted: clear, healthy and glowing skin. For the first time in years, I felt confident without makeup, which was such a game-changer for me. That’s when I knew I had to share this with other women who’ve been on the same endless search for products that actually work.
AFROA Beauty was born from my desire to embrace a minimalist routine—one that’s rooted in simplicity, effectiveness, and the power of natural ingredients. Our mission is about more than just skincare; it’s about honoring ourselves, our time, and our roots. I want to help other women break free from beauty routines that overwhelm and under-deliver. With just a few powerful, multitasking products, you can have the radiant skin you’ve been working toward without the unnecessary steps.
AFROA isn’t just about looking good; it’s about feeling empowered, strong, and connected to something deeper. As I’ve discovered, there’s beauty in simplicity, in nature, and in embracing what truly works. AFROA Beauty celebrates that journey of self-acceptance and resilience that so many of us experience in our 30s. I want every woman to feel that healthy glow—not just from the products, but from the confidence that comes with truly taking care of yourself.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Darine, a native of France, and I hold an MBA in Luxury Brand Management from Paris Business School (Sup de Luxe – Chaire Cartier). This background has cultivated a deep appreciation for luxury, which defines much of who I am. Now, as a proud Canadian, I bring a unique blend of sophistication and global influence to everything I do.
My career has taken me on an incredible journey over the last decade, working between Africa and Canada, supporting and empowering women across ten different countries. Through this work, I was exposed to the remarkable beauty and resilience of African women and their deep connection to nature. During one of my travels in Senegal, I was captivated by the majestic Baobab Tree, often called the “Tree of Life,” and the superfruit it bears. I was drawn to the idea that nature, in its most unrefined form, could provide the key to revitalizing my skin, which had become extremely sensitive over the years. Like so many women, I struggled with hyperpigmentation, dryness, and dullness, especially as I entered my thirties.
Motivated by my own skin struggles and inspired by the ancestral wisdom I encountered, I decided to explore the Baobab’s powerful potential. After three years of research and collaboration with a Canadian lab, I developed a unique blend that would become the foundation of AFROA Beauty. This blend combines Baobab seeds with premium botanicals, marrying ancient wellness traditions with the latest skincare innovations.
AFROA is more than just skincare—it’s a celebration of nature’s resilience and a testament to the strength of women everywhere. We focus on a minimalist approach to skincare, offering a routine that centers on quality and efficacy, allowing busy women to achieve radiant, healthy skin without the need for a complicated regimen. Our all-in-one Radiance Rescue Serum and Baobab Face Oil, the heart of our collection, embody this philosophy, delivering transformative results through simple, yet powerful formulations.
I’m incredibly proud of AFROA Beauty and the impact it has had on our customers. We’ve seen so many women embrace this journey with us, finding confidence in a skincare routine that honors their skin and simplifies their lives. My mission is to invite women to experience the harmony between luxury and natural beauty, helping them celebrate their own radiance with every step.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Building my reputation in the beauty industry has been about more than just creating effective skincare products; it’s been about sharing the deeper meaning behind AFROA and building a personal brand that aligns with the values that women today care about.
The name AFROA is meaningful to me and reflects my vision for the brand. It combines “AFRO,” paying homage to African heritage and the extraordinary natural resources of the continent, with the letter “A” for Authenticity to represent the relationship I want to build with my community. AFROA encapsulates a commitment to honoring the rich ancestral knowledge that inspired the brand. By embracing ingredients like the Baobab, known for its resilience and regenerative properties, AFROA represents strength, tradition, and the beauty of simplicity—qualities that resonate with women seeking more from their skincare routine.
Several factors have played a key role in establishing AFROA and myself within the market:
1. Personal Experience and Connection: Sharing my personal journey and struggles with sensitive skin and the discovery of the Baobab tree’s benefits has helped build a relatable brand story. Women can connect with my story of overcoming skin challenges, which brings authenticity to AFROA Beauty. This personal connection has attracted an audience that values transparency and a deeper meaning behind the products they use.
2. Commitment to Quality and Efficacy: I’ve always prioritized creating products that are as effective as they are luxurious. Collaborating with a Canadian lab and conducting extensive research allowed me to develop a unique, high-quality blend of Baobab and other botanicals. AFROA’s minimalist and effective approach resonates with busy women looking for skincare solutions that actually work, building trust in the brand’s efficacy and quality.
3. Valuing Ancestral Craftsmanship and Sustainable Ingredients: AFROA is founded on respect for nature and the rich heritage of African ingredients. By championing sustainable practices and sourcing Baobab ethically, I’ve built a brand that aligns with modern values around sustainability, which has helped attract a mindful and engaged customer base.
4. Sharing Knowledge and Empowering Women: Beyond skincare, I am passionate about empowering women to embrace their own natural beauty. I’ve built my reputation by engaging with my audience, whether through social media content, blog posts, or speaking engagements. Educating women on skincare routines and natural ingredients has allowed me to connect with them on a more meaningful level.
5. Collaboration with Industry Leaders: Over the years, I’ve partnered with influencers, attended key beauty events, and shared AFROA’s story across various media outlets. By aligning with others who share our values, I’ve been able to reach a broader audience and build credibility within the industry.
6. Building my personal brand as the founder of AFROA has been equally essential. In an industry often dominated by large corporations, I believe there’s immense value in a founder-driven brand, where people can connect with the story and the person behind the products. I strive to be transparent about my journey, the struggles with my own skin, and how I found healing in African ingredients. This authenticity has allowed me to build a reputation based on trust and relatability, which I think is especially important to my audience—women who are looking for a skincare routine that aligns with their own values of wellness and empowerment.
Being visible as the founder has also allowed me to reinforce the mission and values of AFROA at every level, from product creation to customer engagement. This has not only helped establish brand loyalty but has also fostered a community that sees AFROA as a movement, not just a skincare line. By sharing my personal story and passion, I’m able to empower others to take pride in their natural beauty and make mindful choices.
Ultimately, both AFROA and my personal brand are deeply intertwined, and each amplifies the other. As I continue to grow AFROA, I’m committed to sharing my journey, remaining accessible, and standing by the values that have built trust with my audience. This dedication to authenticity and purpose has been a cornerstone of my reputation and will continue to guide the brand’s evolution.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Creating AFROA has truly tested my resilience, particularly when it came to building a **Made-in-Canada brand** that aligns with my values of sustainability, simplicity, and quality. Every step of the process has been a lesson in persistence, from sourcing ingredients to managing manufacturing and shipping.
One of the biggest challenges was finding a manufacturer who understood my vision of combining the finest African botanicals with Canadian production. I knew I wanted to feature Baobab as a core ingredient, but sourcing it responsibly required extensive research and a reliable network in Africa. I worked directly with suppliers there, ensuring ethical sourcing practices and eliminating middlemen to streamline the process. By doing this, I was able to keep our supply chain simple, maintain a low carbon footprint, and uphold AFROA’s sustainability promise. However, this approach comes with its own challenges, as maintaining quality control from such a distance demands constant communication and trust.
Navigating the regulatory landscape for a Made-in-Canada product has been another significant hurdle. The standards are strict, and it took time to find a manufacturer willing to take on a project as unique as AFROA’s. In a world where the market often favors convenience over sustainability, I was determined to find a solution that didn’t compromise my brand’s values. The process of coordinating shipments from Africa to Canada while maintaining the integrity of the raw ingredients required meticulous planning and a commitment to excellence, even when it meant delays or additional costs.
Choosing to build a sustainable brand in a competitive beauty industry presents daily challenges. I knew that setting up a sustainable supply chain in the beauty space would not be easy, especially one where I could guarantee a low carbon footprint. But for me, that’s part of what makes entrepreneurship so meaningful: the challenges aren’t obstacles; they’re opportunities to innovate and find creative solutions.
Resilience is about staying true to your vision despite these challenges. At every step, I’ve had to remind myself why I started AFROA—to empower women with products that are as effective as they are ethically made. Through it all, I’ve come to appreciate that every hurdle we overcome reinforces AFROA’s mission and makes our products even more special.
