We were lucky to catch up with Tymesha Valsin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tymesha, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
My goal was to make sure the name was unique, meaningful and all encompassing! It derived from my passion to incorporate natural elements into my diet as well as my beauty and skincare regimen. It’s the process of combining clean organic ingredients into cosmetics. I like to call it going from “flower to face” a blend of nature into lip wear hence the name “Chemixtry Cosmetics”. However, I must admit that settling on a name was not a simple process. I was determined that the one I selected would not be too long or like any other names that were already out there. I can be an indecisive Libra at times so once I narrowed down my list and asked a couple of my friends and family members to vote on the ones they liked best, it was a no brainer at that point and the perfect name to represent my brand.

Tymesha, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Tymesha Valsin, affectionately called “Mesh” by my grandmother and a few other family members. I transitioned into the cosmetic industry after my grandmother ended her battle with Dementia. She sold cosmetics for years and was very good at it, all while maintaining the upkeep of a household and a fulltime job. After her passing in September 2023, I needed a creative outlet to get me through one of the most difficult times in my life. In addition to my full-time job in the insurance industry, I had a business teaching floral arranging workshops. However, once my grandmother became ill, I lost the drive and passion to continue to pursue it as a business and it became more of a hobby. The day of her passing I signed up for a wreath making class at a local community college near my home to help me perfect my craft as well as provide me with some much-needed therapy. Unfortunately, the class was rescheduled several times and later cancelled. I was very disappointed and let a few months go by before deciding to try another DIY project. It was now the holiday season, and my mom made plans to visit me for Christmas, so I made reservations for us to attend a lipstick making class. One, because red lipstick is one of my mom’s must haves, two, I thought it would be something different for both of us and a great way to keep us from having the “Holiday Blues”. Later that week my mom started to feel a little under the weather and was unable to travel so she cancelled her visit. I was determined to keep my spirits lifted so I decided I would still attend the lipstick making class and bring my husband along for moral support. After attending the class I was so fascinated by the entire process that I decided, along with my husband’s entrepreneurial expertise and his support of my decision, to start my own natural cosmetic line offering ready to wear lipstick and lip gloss products including mobile DIY custom blend workshops where we come to you. My business just launched in June and although its still young in it’s conception it has already proven to be one of the best decisions and business ventures I’ve ever experienced. My products are light and free of all the toxins, so they feel amazing on your lips. I offer a wide range of colors to complement all skin tones and complexions. My customers have consistently given rave reviews from quality to the presentation of the products and look forward to attending the classes. Although it may be cliche to most but my grandmother was a very wise woman and new a good thing when she saw it, so it was only fitting that I follow suit. Therefore, to say that I am more than proud to honor my grandmother with the launch of my own cosmetic business is an understatement.

Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
We all know it takes money to make money and I wanted to turn a thought, an idea, into my reality. Willing to go the extra mile to make that happen I used part of my savings and a refund I received from my student loan payments to make my dreams come true. Although I took a huge risk, I invested in myself and that outweighs the risk, so I have yet to look back.

We’d love to hear your thoughts about selling platforms like Amazon/Etsy vs selling on your own site.
My products are available primarily on my website as well as in person. I feel that having an online presence is necessary to reach a broader audience and allows my brand/business to go beyond my local community. My biggest challenge is balancing a full-time job and operating a business without staff to assist with inventory and filling orders, but with strategic time management skills I make it happen and enjoy the process.
