We were lucky to catch up with Aubrie Mitchell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Aubrie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about how you got your first non-friend, non-family client. Paint the picture for us so we can feel the same excitement you felt on that day.
At the age of 17, I was just beginning to explore my love for makeup, experimenting with different techniques and practicing on friends and family. I had no idea that a single opportunity would completely change the course of my life. One day, a coworker reached out and asked if I could do makeup for a wedding. The bride had seen some of my work on social media and was interested. I was both excited and nervous—this would be my first real bridal client and wedding party.
I spent hours preparing, ensuring I had all the right products and techniques down. On the wedding day, the atmosphere was magical, and as I applied the bride’s makeup, I could see how confident and radiant she became. In that moment, I realized the transformative power of makeup—not just in appearance, but in how it can make someone feel. That feeling was incredible, and I knew this was something I wanted to pursue.
The bridal party loved their looks, and soon, word of mouth spread. That first experience was the catalyst that shifted my passion into a career. I knew I wanted to make brides feel special on their big day. From there, I started taking my craft more seriously, learning new skills, and booking more weddings. It was clear to me that this was my path, and I was ready to build a business around it.
At 21, I made the decision to enroll in cosmetology school to expand my services. I wanted to offer more than just makeup—I wanted to provide a full beauty experience for my clients. That decision helped me grow as an artist and entrepreneur, allowing me to build a fulfilling career as a professional makeup artist. It all started with that first bridal party at 17, and I’ve never looked back.
Aubrie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Aubrie Mitchell, and I’m a makeup artist and lash designer specializing in bridal and editorial makeup, as well as custom lash design. Beauty has always been a passion of mine, and it’s something I’ve nurtured over the years, allowing me to offer a range of services that help my clients feel their absolute best on important occasions.
In addition to makeup services, I’m proud to offer custom lash sets, where I design bespoke lash maps tailored specifically to each client. This process lets me create something unique and personal for every individual, enhancing their natural features and giving them the exact look they desire—whether that’s a natural finish or a more dramatic, voluminous effect.
What really sets my work apart is the personal connection I create with my clients. Over the years, many of my clients have become lifelong friends, and I’m incredibly proud of the community that has grown around my brand. For me, it’s not just about providing a service; it’s about making people feel empowered, confident, and seen. I want each person who sits in my chair to walk away feeling not only beautiful but also cared for.
I’ve worked hard to build a brand that’s focused on comfort and safety, always listening to what my clients need and creating an environment where they feel heard. I believe that beauty is personal, and my approach reflects that—I take the time to understand how my clients want to feel and what will make them shine.
What I’m most proud of is the trust my clients place in me, coming back for other important life events and referring me to their friends and family. I want potential clients to know that when they work with me, they’re not just getting makeup or lash services—they’re becoming part of a supportive, loving community.
My goal is to continue growing as an artist and a business owner, expanding my offerings while keeping that personal, one-on-one connection that makes each client feel special. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m excited to see where it continues to go.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
One story that stands out in my journey is from when I first started building my business. Early on, I had moments of doubt, especially as I was navigating the transition from makeup being a passion to making it a career. One particularly challenging time was when I booked a large wedding party that required me to work long hours and coordinate multiple looks under tight deadlines. I was still relatively new and didn’t have a large team to support me, so the pressure was intense.
On the day of the wedding, there were several unexpected challenges. A few members of the bridal party were running late, and the schedule quickly became tight. I had to adjust my plans and work faster while maintaining the quality of my work. Despite the mounting stress, I stayed calm and focused, knowing that I couldn’t let the bride or her party feel any of the tension. I pushed through, kept the energy positive, and managed to finish the entire wedding party on time.
That experience taught me the importance of staying resilient in high-pressure situations. It would’ve been easy to panic, but instead, I relied on my skills and adapted quickly to the situation. It wasn’t just about getting the job done—it was about making sure that everyone still felt comfortable, beautiful, and confident.
From that day forward, I knew I could handle the demands of this business, no matter how challenging. It reinforced my belief that resilience isn’t just about overcoming obstacles, but about maintaining grace and professionalism even in the most stressful moments. It’s a mindset that has allowed me to keep growing, no matter what comes my way.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is seeing the transformation in my clients—not just in how they look, but in how they feel. There’s something incredibly special about watching someone’s confidence grow as they see themselves in a new light. Whether it’s a bride on her wedding day or a client coming in for a custom lash set, being part of that moment when they feel empowered and beautiful is what makes this work so fulfilling.
I also love the creative freedom that comes with my work. Every client is unique, and I get to collaborate with them to create something that’s tailored specifically to their vision. It’s so rewarding to bring their ideas to life, whether it’s through makeup or custom lashes, and knowing that I’ve helped them feel like the best version of themselves.
What’s equally meaningful to me is the relationships I build with my clients. Many of them become friends, and being able to share in some of the most important moments in their lives is such an honor. That connection is something I truly cherish and is a huge part of what keeps me passionate about what I do.
