We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jamiah Day. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jamiah below.
Jamiah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s kick things off with a hypothetical question – if it were up to you, what would you change about the school or education system to better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career?
Personally I would change the courses High schoolers take during their last 2 years of school. I, myself stop going to school in 10th grade because I felt as if I wasn’t learning things I needed to be a successful adult and build generational wealth for my family and those who are to come into my family so they don’t have to start from scratch.
Students should be learning how to pick a career they’ll not only love but can see their self doing for years or starting their own business. The rat race jobs such as, doctors, lawyers, teachers, etc. Yes we need all those things but we also need garbage drivers, investors, clothing designers & so much more to continue this constantly growing world we live
Durning this last two years student should be finding their passion, learning life skills such as how to grow credit, pay bills, buy houses & cards, the principle of saving & so much more
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I first discovered my passion for hair during my 9 month period in trade school living my family’s dream of nursing. I knew I wanted to help but not in that way. Halfway through I to start my hair business & take hair serious. Once Goatdlocs was in motion I realized peoples smile of satisfaction & confidence boost was the way i wanted to help because who doesn’t love getting a fresh retwist or just a new hairstyle in general. 2 years later I still have my passion for hair & business, constantly evolving & growing. For the third year I have some awesome things in store not only for my customers but to those who can also benefit off its health factors.
My business has been able to flourish for the last to years not only because I provide an amazing service but a lot of my clients/customers like the fact that in their service price wash & style is included. Not only the service price but they’re able to book an 4/20 friendly session with their service at no extra cost.
So far I’m most proud of my discipline to keep going on slow months & bad days. Most people don’t know I work a 9-5 as well as service my clients when needed. Some days I’m tired but I remember why I chose the path of business & I knew the fruit of labor weren’t gonna be quick grow and also time was a big factor and in the time span of 2 years I’ve done amazing to be a starter business.
Any potential listeners I want you to know consistency and God makes all things possible
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn comfortability. The backstory with that is that once I see I’m in smooth sailings I’d take my foot off the gas which would cause my course to shift. In order to consistently I have to be uncomfortable at times in order to grow. Those uncomfortable moments in life help us evolve & see different perspectives which causes growth.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Respect is a two way street, & it’s also earned not given. If you’re respectful to your staff/coworkers their bond to be respectful to you. Which creates room to build trust & once trust is built your team & business will be unstoppable. Be fair & also move with what’s better for the business and as a team, 2 heads are better than 1 as they say
