We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amy & Kelli a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Amy & Kelli, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later?
While hindsight is always 20/20, sometimes we think it would have been beneficial to start our podcast, Motherhood Uncovered, during the pandemic. More people were home and there was a surge in online engagement and less competition for monetization. Also, it could have been beneficial to build an online community when people were isolated. If we started sooner, we may have built an audience early when there were fewer podcasts allowing us to capitalize on trends and sponsorship opportunities. However, waiting allowed us to have more time to devote to our business, and more time to gather knowledge and prepare.
The timing just wasn’t right for us…Kelli had a newborn baby, and returned to her full-time job, and Amy was juggling homeschooling her 3 children. But we can’t look back on the what-ifs. The timing is right for us now, both personally and professionally. And we know that the timing is right for our audience as well! There are always moms who need a community of support, and we hope that our podcast helps them to feel seen, heard, and validated – and laugh a little too! Every mom is different in the way she does her own motherhood and we love interviewing a variety of women on our podcast and learn about ways they are thriving – and maybe even get an idea or a mom hack in the process!
Amy & Kelli, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We met in 2007 – Amy owned a boutique PR agency in La Mesa. She had a six month old baby and was in need of a summer intern to help support her business as she juggled her new role as a mom. Kelli just graduated from California State University, San Marcos and was eager to learn as much about the Public Relations industry as possible as she began her career. One month into Kelli’s internship, Amy realized Kelli was invaluable to her life – both personally and professionally – so she hired her on full time.
For several years we had the best time working together! We balanced each other perfectly in all aspects of our lives. In late 2009, it was time for us to go our separate directions – Kelli continued her PR career at another San Diego agency, and Amy made the choice to stay home with her young children. But we’ve stayed friends through it all. Careers…traveling…weddings…babies…raising children together.
Fast forward to 2023, we decided to join forces once again! We started a media content company, Uncover Media, and also a podcast, Motherhood Uncovered. Not only is it a fun way for us to stay connected (as our own form of therapy), but our hope is that it also helps other moms feel connected. Being a mom – while very rewarding – can be very isolating. We’ve found that many moms don’t have the support system they need. So, we use this platform to share our own personal journeys, struggles and successes. Between us our kids range from toddlers to teenagers (4 years to 17 years old), and we represent the working mom and the stay at home mom. But we love to interview other moms on our podcast to share their unique journeys as well.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
In the early days of working together at a small, local PR agency, we prided ourselves on the personal touches we provided to our clients. We pitched their stories and loved making them shine. We gave our all to pitching their products and services all while ensuring they embodied the stories that made them unique.
Now we are our own clients, working to promote our product which is US…we’re shifting gears and showcasing our own personal voice. We are using the skills we developed from our PR background, but now we get to create our own message, about us. It’s our passion project and we are just getting started. It’s our voice now and we love creating something that’s our own, and interviewing other incredible people along the way. We are sharing our daily stories, being vulnerable, and hoping that others feel connected in our journey.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
As PR professionals, we built our careers around letting others live in the limelight. Starting this podcast has forced us out of our comfort zone. It has really been a learning curve to let ourselves take center stage for once. Also as moms, our lives tend to revolve around our children, so this podcast is something we get to do for ourselves. That’s a difficult mind-shift for mothers and self-proclaimed people pleasures. It’s been a journey of discomfort and change, but has ultimately led to greater fulfillment, authenticity and balance so we can, in turn, be better mothers, wives and friends.
