We recently connected with Jon Mullane and have shared our conversation below.
Jon, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I knew the moment I started songwriting and recording. I had been a performer for a number of years before that, but once the creative process got a hold on me, there was no turning basck. I had submitted a few of my early songs to a local radio station contest, and was pleasantly suprised that I was picked as one of the five finalists. Through this process, my songs were recorded in a pro studio and were included on a compilation album that the radio station released, and played on their station. The first time I heard my song on the radio, that resonated with me like nothing else, and propelled me into doing this as my life’s work.

Jon, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Going forward from my decision to persue a music career professionaly, I have since gone on to releasing five successful full length albums and numerous music videos. I’ve been fortunate to have had the support at radio and attained several top 40 Billboard-charting radio singles in Canada. A highlight is when my song My New American Girl, from my third album ‘Shine’, broke into the top 40 at #32 on the Hot AC Billboard Chart in the US. That is a particularly proud moment for me as I was the only independent artist on that level of the chart.
Many of my songs have been featured in numerous television shows, films, commercials and sporting events, including my hit
single Make You Move, airing on NBC promoting the Beijing Olympics.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
The key I believe is to believe passionatly in what you do and cultivate the will to peresvere through all the ups and downs, as there will be many. Persistance, ie ‘staying the the game’ will briing about good results. Many arists also struggle with this, but I beleive its the road to success, however you may define that.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of creating music is when a song I wrote makes an impression on and emotionally connects with a listener. Even if it’s just one person. I’ve recieved many notes and messages from fans thanking me for a particular song they made that emotional connection with, and in some cases changed their life.
