We were lucky to catch up with Yuyang Liao recently and have shared our conversation below.
Yuyang, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project to me is my first stop-motion animation called “Romantic Night.” It was the first time I completed a full stop-motion project in my life. I had never had any experience in stop-motion production before, so researching and personally creating the props, filming, and editing it all by myself was a very important milestone for me.
Yuyang, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a passionate artist who loves creating. Since childhood, I’ve enjoyed doing crafts and making little things to play house. Although my undergraduate major was 3D animation, I have always dabbled in small crafts. When I graduated, the global pandemic kept me at home for a long time. During that time, I watched many stop-motion animations and suddenly had the idea, “Why not try making one myself?” As someone with a strong drive, I immediately began preparing, even though I had no relevant experience; I believe in taking action when I want to do something.
I focus on creating stop-motion animations, offering unique works that aim to convey emotions and ideas through visual storytelling. I love telling stories and hope my works allow viewers to feel the joy and warmth of creation. What sets me apart is my persistence and innovation; even without experience, I am willing to explore and try new possibilities.
I am most proud of my first stop-motion animation, which marks my entry and growth in this field. I want potential clients, followers, and fans to know that my brand represents creativity, courage, and a love for craftsmanship, and I look forward to sharing my stories and works with more people.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
My lesson is that being overly fixated on details often leads me to stagnate. Take my first stop-motion animation, for example; the work was quite naive, and I was afraid to let others judge it. This fear hindered my progress, both in production techniques and editing skills. I realized that caring too much about others’ opinions caused me to miss many opportunities for growth.
True breakthroughs come from the courage to share and practice, rather than being bound by insecurity.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
As a stop-motion artist, the most valuable aspect is my ability to breathe life into objects and intricately tell every detail and change during the story writing, prop making, and filming processes. When writing stories, I think about how to connect with the audience through characters and emotions; in prop making, I focus on the details to ensure each element adds depth to the narrative; and in filming, every tiny movement and change reflects my passion and pursuit of creativity. This process not only allows me to fully express my creativity but also fosters a profound emotional resonance with the audience.
Seeing my work bring joy and inspiration to others is an unparalleled sense of accomplishment. This response not only validates my efforts but also makes me realize the power of art. Throughout this process, the creation of stop-motion animation is filled with challenges; each step requires immense patience and precision, from repeatedly adjusting movements to carefully designing each frame. These experiences have allowed me to grow and progress by overcoming difficulties. I firmly believe that this dedication and love for art will inspire me to continue exploring more creative possibilities.
