Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Cameron Thompson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Cameron, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
If I could go back in time, I definitely would have started my own business sooner. I think sometimes, we have this notation that our ideas, dreams, and passion aren’t impactful and life changing so how in the world can we create impact and income? This is something I fight every day mentally in my business because it can get discouraging.
I started Dynamic Fusion Studio in 2020 with some ambitious yet unrealistic goals of disrupting the fitness industry. As a plus size, woman of color, I just KNEW that because I had the drive, the energy, the success will come easy and within 12 months. WRONG! I started a business with 0 experience and education in fitness/business and right before a pandemic hit. The pandemic really gave me the opportunity to assess my business and recreate it for myself as I am discovering more about myself.
Starting this business sooner would have given me the opportunity to be placed in some roots and really seeking out mentors who mirror my ideology on fitness and how to remain true to myself while in the process of building a community. Now, I find myself in that exploratory phase of finding mentors who can feed into my passions and push myself to be consistent and show up for my community that I’ve created.
I’ve learned that there is no perfect time or moment. Doing things boldly and naively, with gumption is ok!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I created Dynamic Fusion Studio in 2020, because the industry of fitness needed more representation. Not only did it need more representation but it needs individuals that boldly tells clients you are enough in your current body.
I created fitness dance classes and routines not with the sole focus of bodies shrinking but for women to embrace boosting their confidence and movement.
I focus on hip-hop and rap music because we all love a good beat! When the beats hit you paired with movement that gets that heart rate up, you freaking feel good! My workouts are for all bodies who enjoy movement or want to explore more movement. Dance fitness are workouts that don’t feel like a workout and won’t have you snoozing.
At Dynamic Fusion Studio, we don’t profit over anyones insecurities. We don’t say that a persons body is bad or that they must obtain a specific standard. We say come as you are, shake what your mama gave ya, and feel fierce while doing it. I am proud when women can tell me that their confidence has boosted after a workout, that makes my heart so happy. It reminds me that I am here for the impact!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn what health meant for me. Fitness does contain a physical component but it also includes emotional fitness and mental fitness. I have learned that just because someone may appear to be physically fit, they’re still hurting. I think it’s our responsibility as people in the fitness industry to tap into these other realms to help individuals create some lifelong habits.
I thought my worth for so long strictly was only because of how I looked. Lies! My worth has nothing to do with my body. This is the disruption I’m talking about in the fitness industry. Speaking up about self worth and value and creating a safe space for women to move and jiggle and wiggle without any reservations or judgment. You’re worthy before AND after the workout; always.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Here is a transparent truth: when I started my business I had no idea how much money it was going to costs. I’m sure a lot of entrepreneurs can relate.
Like I said earlier, I stopped waiting on the perfect time and just started. The startup costs were slowly rising between website, booking studio space, filming equip and the time and energy of creating videos that include editing and posting. But I pressed forward. I finally created a subscription service and from those profits I put that right back into the business. In fitness, your #1 goal really is to build the community first in hopes that the income will come later. I am still learning, growing, and building and perhaps I’ll have even more insight 5 years from now, but taking it one goal at a time has helped tremendously on working on scaling up.
