We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Herb Shells a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Herb, appreciate you joining us today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
What started off as just me loving food and telling various people I would come in contact with about my experiences. Shifted to social media when I saw another foodie do a review in their vehicle. I thought to myself. Hey I could do that non my lunch break. I did my first video and received great feedback. I been doing it every since. Almost 2 years now!
Herb, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
For those who don’t know I’m a licensed barber for the past 24 years. I have had multiple shops. Currently down to just one shop as I want to explore other ventures. Food has always been big in my family. My grandmother would tell me and teach my things about food. Along with others. Being a entrepreneur is in my spirit. Having resilience and tenacity is what keeps me going. If I can’t create or challenge myself then I have nothing. Setting goals and accomplishing them is satisfying to me.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I remember wanting to start a business with friends. I quickly learned that your vision is not the same as theirs. And in business the visions have to align. So I had to make adjustments and just do it alone. Sometimes the thought of doing business with friends feels like a great idea. But to keep the relationships good it’s best not too.
Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
Funding my business I got a second job where I saved all my money from. For two years and opened my first barber shop!
