We recently connected with Martae Hunter and have shared our conversation below.
Martae, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with education – we’d love to hear your thoughts about how we can better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career.
A major thing that I would change about our current educational system would start in secondary education. I believe that our younger generation lacks the fundamental education when it comes to basic finances, and understanding what credit is. Growing up, I remember only having one semester of learning about interest rates and how not to get trapped in a car payment that you ultimately can’t afford. I will say that out of all of the things that I did learn, that is the one semester that I have taken with
me even 13 years later. I wish there were more things that we would have learned in school that we could use in our everyday adult life. If kids and teenagers learn those skillful tools at an early age and consistently throughout their adolescent lifetime, I believe we could have more young adults not in as much debt.

Martae, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
While I was in college I had difficulties figuring out what I wanted to do after I left. I started to look into the things that I had an interest in and that I enjoyed learning about. I landed on Real Estate, and how homes were built to their agricultural. After speaking with a broker, and learning what all went into becoming a Realtor, I knew that’s what I wanted to do. After passing the exam, I threw myself into gaining clients by doing leases. Helping families and individuals find houses and apartments to lease out, and within 2 or so years those people would be ready to purchase their first homes with me. Due to all of my hard work that first year in leases, I was the Top Leasing Agent for my brokerage my first year. When I won that award it lit a fire under me, and every year since then I’ve doubled my business every year. I believe what has set me apart and has helped with that is my approach to my clients. I go above and beyond for my clients, even more than they would ask for because I think that’s the only way to survive this industry. Doing just the bare minimum doesn’t set anyone apart, there are times I’ve gone to a client’s home right before we went live and cleaned their home to prepare for photos, and did lawn work as well.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Staying consistent and understanding the processes.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Given that real estate is so up and down, you won’t always be representing sellers and buyers. When I am between clients, I tend to go back to my basics which is leasing. Those that lease will eventually become homebuyers, and if I do leases throughout the year it will help in future years when business is slow.
