We recently connected with Nancy Terrones-haynes and have shared our conversation below.
Nancy , appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
March 11, 2020 My husband and I had just come back from a staycation. I had been currently working at a Salon in South Pasadena California and had built a clientele over the past 3 years. We came back to a changed world. The pandemic had hit and the world had closed. It was a complete shock and overwhelming realization as am Independent Contractor to have everything you built just stop with no safety net. The day I went back into the Salon was a new reality. Masks, 6ft distance and high levels of sanitation. I had made a conscious decision to pack up my things and isolate with my family as i had caught wind that we were to go into a full blown lock down. The decision was hard but easy. I had to really think about what my future was to look like at this point. A week later the world stopped and that is when the wheels began to turn in what hairstyling was to look like. 3 months later I took a risk on myself and I opened My private studio in Pasadena California. I took my whole entire savings and invested in myself. June 8th I opened up 1982 and a whole other door opened that has now propelled me forward into pursuing my career in Las Vegas Nevada at a salon I never though ti would be.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My Name is Nancy Terrones-Haynes I’m 42, I’m a mother of 3 grown young adults, a wife to an amazing Englishman, A first generation American to a Mexican born mother and A Native American Dad. The youngest out of 3 siblings and the only girl. I was raised in a creative and athletic home. My mom was a hairdresser for 40 plus years and my dad was an artist and Landscape contractor. the drive and motivation was something that was a heavy presence and key life moto to never give up and always follow your dreams.
Basically born and raised in the salon it was second nature to see what hair was for me. To watch my mom interact with her clients, to build relationships that became friendships, to see her make their light shine brighter at the end of their service was something I always saw as magic. My Dad was a man of many talents but his most true gift was how he made people feel. I would watch him speak to his clients on jobs and he made them feel at ease. He created a trust and in that moment came the bond. He not just would step into their homes but he made his clients feel that their home was his and his creative would become their reality. It is in these these 2 humans throughout the course of my life and their careers that i was inspired to create magic the way that they did.
14 years of becoming a mom and trying to finish school I finally found myself right where I wanted to be. Hair has never been an idea. It has never been a dream, Hair has never been anything but how my heart beats. It is the creativity in taking a product combining it with hair and making something so special and beautiful that at the end of a service the biggest thank you is in the smile, the tears, the joy and the immense amount of love that one feels for themselves. The journey that i took to get to this very moment in my career has been the biggest accomplishment besides being a mother to my children. Its everyday that I get to be that person that takes a vision and idea and make it a reality for a client that makes what I do so worth it. to be able to have clients ultimate trust to create the beautiful hair that they dream of is the most rewarding and gratifying feeling. I have envisioned my hair career in so many ways since I started when i was 18 and to be able to be where I am now sometimes doesn’t feel real.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Social Media became a huge part of my career that was something extremely foreign to me. What was once a selfie platform of sharing silly things became a portfolio page. Over the past 6 and half years I have began to build a page of a touch of personal with heavy share of my work. For me it has always been key to give my audience and client base a little piece of me. Just enough to create a connection. Never do I share something that I am not. I always make sure to connect with my audience to bring them in with a piece of my personality however that may be. Whether its through music, hair, art, visual stimulation and or a simple selfie. What kind of audience are you trying to reach, what is the demographic, and who do you want to come out of what your projecting to others. All these things have been a major key note on how I continue to build. I always stay true to you and just have fun. the moment it becomes work is the moment we lose ourselves.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of building for me is getting to know someone personally and gaining their trust. Besides Instagram I have always found myself meeting clients while I’m out. A innocent conversation at a Bar, restuarant, grocery store, car dealership or even at the bank. For me I like to find the moment as a I read a room and scope out hair. I like to create an element is conversation where an invitation on the other persons part opens a door. I like to get to know people and create a moment that creates excitement in wanting to sit in my chair.
