We recently connected with Dorothy Horton and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Dorothy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
One of the main very components in establishing a business is having a starting point. Everyone is different and for me it started with a vision. The vision was created from an experience of past events while working in the medical field. I wanted to be part of a positive change, after seeing what I was exposed to in the healthcare industry. I decided to start my own business, and the first physical step was thinking of a title for my business- at the time I thought of ” Dot
s elderly care” in the year 2016. It remained that name without any action behind it for a year. Finally, after getting fed up with where I was at career- wise in my life- I stepped out on faith and invested in my vision. I changed the name to make it more description based. I registered the new name, and went on the government website and followed the steps to legalize the brand,
Some of the key challenges in setting up the office was getting to know the area and the type of people in the area to determine if the product would be beneficial and affordable to the economic status in the region of my choice, for example… you wouldn’t want to sell newspapers in a computer store.
I would not do anything different regarding my business venture because of the time and effort I’ve put into finding the place that’s been beneficial to the business and overall positive content. The advice I would give to a first-time starter would be to have patience and gain as much knowledge as possible about your business, not just the product but the legal aspects as well, Be prepared to ride roller coaster of ups and downs.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Dorothy Horton. I have worked in the healthcare industry 30 plus years, with my degree focused on Health Science. I am very involved in my community and involved on several boards as well as being a part of our local chamber as an ambassador. I started my homecare business in 2017 and eventually added non-medical transportation. We are a family operated business that focus on meeting the needs of elderly home care and transportation. We also serve as advocates for the elderly by supplying them with pertinent information regarding their insurance, and choices that determines the quality of life they chose to live whether in a facility or home, we assist in helping them decide and provide them with other professional resources as needed, we work closely with other vendors such as hospitals, hospice, home health social workers and nurses.
We are most proud to be able to serve our community in its capacity and provide as many resources as possible to assist the elderly community and meet the majority of their needs. We believe in putting God first and praying over every assignment and client that God entrust with us. We are also thankful and show our appreciation by giving to the community. We host many breakfast, luncheons and health fairs. I have been chosen to be interviewed and featured in ‘Lifestyle magazine’ for the last 2 years,
We as a company are proud to have assisted one the former senators of Ga. a few celebrities and other well-known people. We pride ourselves on treating EVERYONE with dignity and respect no matter the economic level.
What sets us apart from many but not all is the fact that we are very trustworthy, personable and most of all down-home loving and truly caring team in individuals.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
There are many lessons I had to unlearn from being raised in the country thinking that everyone is trustworthy to an extent. I tend to give everyone a chance or opportunity to ‘get it right’ or learn from your mistake but not all want to learn, and their intention is to make you fail or feel miserable.
The mistake that business owners experience; them wanting to help their employees when they can. I have given extra bonuses public and private, birthday gifts to many of my employees only to witness when they get upset about an issue; their mission turns to being dramatic and a revengeful situation, which oftentimes leave me baffled with a bag full of questions and mixed emotions. I have determined that everyone around me is not with me or for me to be a friend or anything close, it’s just about getting money by any means necessary- with that I determined it VERY important to invest in a legal team and to limited what I do with my employees to cut down angry revenge if something happens.
However, I currently have an AMAZING team and am thankful for every past experience I’ve encountered, the good and the bad, I wouldn’t be who I am today if not for my experiences
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I believe education will always be the for-front of any business; it’s not always going to be from a physical institution. I have gained so much knowledge from You-tube and other social media platforms featuring teachers and other professionals. I get the most wisdom and advice from my spiritual background. One that I must share is found in Psalms 71:18 ” Now when I am old and grey, O God , do not forsake me, until I declare your strength to this generation, your power to everyone who is to come.”
As a chamber member, the chamber offers many classes and sessions that are intended to benefit all business leaders.
I have had some amazing mentors/clients that are and were very successful business owners that have given me golden nuggets of advice and encouragement to keep doing what I am doing. I believe in giving into my community and it is returned back to me in many forms of gratitude,
