We caught up with the brilliant and insightful City Girls a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
City , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
In early 2022 I saw a women’s walking group on Instagram in New York City, then Chicago, and thought it would be wonderful to have one in Houston. I waited a few months to see if anyone else had the same thought, hoping someone else would launch a group. At some point I realized that if this was something I wanted in Houston, I’d need to do it myself. I took a chance, put myself out there, and announced a walk for the morning of May 1st meeting in Buffalo Bayou Park at the Wortham Fountain. I arrived that morning not knowing what to expect then a woman walked up and she asked if this was the meeting spot for the City Girls. Yes! Then a few minutes later, another, and another, and by 9, there were eighteen of us! We walked and talked for 3 miles around the bayou, and made plans to get together again the following Sunday. City Girls has been going and growing ever since! Women from the original eighteen continue walking with us, and we’ve grown from eighteen to thousands, with new women joining every single walk. Taking a chance creating a community within our larger Houston community has become one of the most meaningful decisions I’ve made, and I’d do it all over again (and again)!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
City Girls Who Walk Houston is a women’s walking group in Houston, Texas. We welcome all women, all ages, including babies, toddlers, children, and friendly dogs on leashes. We get together every Sunday morning to walk in Buffalo Bayou Park meeting at the Wortham Fountain. In addition to our weekly walks, we also get together for coffee every Sunday morning, lead POPUP walks and hikes on various days, times, locations and distances around Houston. Besides our walks, we get together the first Saturday of each month for brunch, host wellness events, lead volunteer initiatives, fundraise for causes we care about, partner with other organizations and businesses, support underserved women in the community with our City Girls Community Closet, plan a coffee each quarter for women new to Houston, and enrich the lives of women in our community through inspiring programming at City Girls University.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
We’re an organization founded by women, for women, with a guiding principal of supporting women. Our reputation is built on a foundation of trust. We take our responsibility of creating an inclusive and welcoming environment while serving our community very seriously. One of the simplest things we do, that has had a noticeable impact, is we begin every walk on time. This very small thing is a very (very) big thing to our community.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Keeping it simple and real. Staying focused on who we are and what we do, nothing more, nothing less. We communicate clearly and consistently, and we do what we say we’re going to do.
