We recently connected with Sheila Williamson and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sheila, thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
I hope to be remembered as someone who really cared about others and strove to make a difference in our community. My heart hurts for so many who need help right now and I try to make sure the ones I can help get the help they need through sponsoring events, referring them to some other groups to help them, promoting the organizations who DO offer help, and standing up for those who feel they have no where to turn, no one to hear them. Our firm is dedicated to helping the communities that we serve, not just trying to make profits for ourselves. It has been my experience that, in order to understand the needs, you need to serve, not just write checks. Then, it becomes a personal mission to help. I learned this lesson from my Dad who served on many boards and organizations, always willing to help when someone needed it! When I was hired at Haiman Hogue, I expressed the desire to make them community partners and explained what that meant. That is why our firm is so dedicated to helping others.
Sheila, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a wife to Jeff, mother to Chad, and proud member of the Mckinney community since 2000. My background is in Marketing and I was hired to do just that at Haiman Hogue. PLLC. Our firm practices: Wills, Trusts, Probate, Guardianship, Special Needs, Asset Protection, and Business Formation/Planning. But, soon after, my job description changed when I told them what it meant to me to be a community advocate/partner and introduced them to some organizations that help, especially the Senior population, which most certainly is in our wheelhouse. Organizations such as Meals on Wheels who offer, not only nutritious meals to homebound seniors, but the all important visits that serve as wellness checks for those individuals. So now…my job is to promote Haiman Hogue, but also to introduce parts of the community where we can serve and make a difference.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Covid. We were considered essential business so we continued to operate daily…but differently. All of our speaking engagements and educational events were immediately canceled so…..what were we to do? I learned about webinars, and talked our firm into trying them. I educated myself and the team on how this could work. Would it be successful? No one was to know unless we tried. Actually they were quite successful and we continue to do them monthly as continuing education. We offer a topic that will benefit social workers, licensed counselors, caregivers, and other law professionals each month. We are reaching people all across the country and some even in other countries. It has been an amazing success. Now, of course, we still do live educational events each month, as they are incredibly successful, but we do offer this important alternative as well. We also did a video recorded fundraiser for Meals on Wheels that was successful. I am very proud of this alternative way of doing business that we learned and put into normal practice.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Networking events…always meeting new people and getting to know as many as possible. Also, volunteering to help with community events and offering sponsorship and marketing expertise to help non profits in our community. I love what I do, am passionate about the services we offer to the community, plus the support for their events. But…a note about networking…it only is successful if you are faithful to the organization with your presence and your support, and your willingness to serve, not just gather leads for yourself. If you lead with service to others, you will be recognized and highly regarded as well as respected.
