Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Trevor J. Brown. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Trevor J. , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I’ve always been someone that has had a variety of interests. Growing up I remember my parents having a kitchen radio and it was always on the oldies station, so I grew up hearing amazing bands like The Beatles. When I was young, I didn’t know it was oldies, I just knew it was amazing music. Along with music, I wanted to be a guy like Tom Brokaw. I thought it would be cool to be a news anchor. As I grew up my interests expanded to include sports and hearing sports broadcasters like Marv Albert, Jim Nantz and Kevin Harlan. I remember listening to the American Top 40 countdown on the radio with Casey Kasem and then when I was a bit older Loveline with Adam Carolla and Dr. Drew. I thought these people had the coolest jobs in the world. I would see people like Sir Paul McCartney. Sir Paul has done art and photography and even different types of music too, like classical and experimental projects under other names. Tom Delonge of Blink-182 has done other types of music too, written books and done films and even chased UFO’s. And then I thought, I like broadcasting. I like doing music. I like taking pictures. I like writing. I enjoy film. I want to do it all. So I decided I wanted to house my love for all these mediums and artistic projects under one roof, and that is when I launched my company Inherent Dream back in 2015.
I knew back in high school that I wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally. After high school I went to school for radio broadcasting, but it took a long time to figure out a path to make that my normal “day-job”. I worked in radio, the advertising industry, marketing and even managed a staffing office before realizing (and following my own advice) that you don’t need anyone’s permission to chase your dream. And in October of 2022, Inherent Dream became “official”.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Trevor J. Brown. I live in Minnesota and am 38 years old. I started my company in 2015 as a “side-hustle” and just recently became “official” in October of 2022. Inherent Dream is a world dedicated to artistic exploration, which includes The Inherent Dream Podcast Network, Inherent Dream Records and a variety of projects involving art, photography, books and eventually film. I started this company out of my love of media and the arts. I love radio and podcasts and giving opinion. I love tv and film. I enjoy photography and the arts.
Through the website inherentdream.com, people can experience The Inherent Dream Podcast Network, which is home to two programs currently… 763 The Local Morning Show (news, weather, sports, community calendar segment) and also The Trevor J. Brown Show (longer form interviews, commentary on life). Also on the website, people can learn more about Inherent Dream Records and the variety of albums we have released.
I think what sets this company apart is how it is real. What you see…. what you hear, is what you get. I am not trying to be anyone else. It’s truly authentic. I’m not paying for likes and follows. I am not into that. It’s all about authentic, organic growth. If you like what Inherent Dream does with the podcasts, music and other projects, thank you and please tell a friend. If it’s not for you, that is ok too.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I went to school for radio broadcasting and worked for a variety of stations for many years after college. I realized very early in that journey, that as much as I loved radio and being behind the microphone, money was tougher to come by in the industry. For every legend like Howard Stern, you have 10,000 struggling to pay the bills and make ends meet. So for many years I would work part-time in radio and then also a variety of other jobs, including jobs in the advertising industry and in staffing, where I was a recruiter and then I also ran a staffing office. I am grateful for these jobs and this time, but it took me many years to realize that I was not good at managing people and I didn’t want to do that.
I met my future wife in 2017 and I was so inspired by her, for a variety of reasons, but one of those reasons was she ran her own business. I thought that was so cool… to be your own boss! And while I worked for “the man”, she got to set her own hours and do her own thing. I was getting tired. I was getting bored. I would talk to her. I would talk to friends and family. I would pray, seeking an answer on how I could figure out a way to do my own thing and perhaps start my own company. It took a minute, but I remember being with my wife in South Dakota. We were on a little getaway. I remember being there, surrounded by all this nature and beauty and this thought just came into my head, and that little thought said, “You can keep thinking about it. You can keep talking about it. You can keep praying about it. But you know the answer and it is right in front of you.”
This “Inherent Dream” was in front of my face the entire time and I never saw it. So after talking about this with my wife and thinking on it, it was time to put one foot in front of the other and start the thing officially. In 2015 Inherent Dream started but was a mere “side hustle”. In late 2022, I put together a business plan/strategy and took the leap. And now that is why I tell other people thinking about chasing their dreams… you don’t need permission.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Not that I had to unlearn this, but as a society we are taught to always climb the ladder and asking what is the next step. I remember working in the advertising industry and I started off as a temp in a call center. Two weeks later I was a full-time employee in that call center. Then a couple years later I was the 2nd in command in the call center. Then a year later I was running the call center. When I worked in the staffing world, it was the same sort of “climb”. I was a recruiter, then I was the manager of the staffing office. I just sort of continued the climb without asking myself if I really wanted it. And I didn’t. It didn’t provide me any happiness. It took me eight years to realize I wasn’t a good manager of people and that frankly, I didn’t want to do it. So the point is this… you don’t need to follow the “normal” path that society thinks you should follow. You can do it on your terms, whatever those terms may be. Blaze your own path and go all in, all the damn time.
