We were lucky to catch up with Marisa Hernandez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Marisa, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
From a young age, I always knew I wanted to be in the creative field. I even asked my mom to audition me for Barney when I was little! Life, of course, took its course, and I grew up, but in 2016, when the chance to audition in Houston, Texas came up, I couldn’t let it slip by. That audition led to a scholarship offer from The New York Conservatory of Dramatic Arts, and saying “yes” to that opportunity was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Now, after living in New York City for eight years, I practically consider myself a New Yorker!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
At the moment, I’m transitioning into a new passion project that has been on my mind for years. This project will allow me to help others kickstart their journeys in acting and launch their careers. I know this is where I’m meant to be. Alongside this, I currently work in hospitality and create content for social media, which I really enjoy. It allows me to tap into my creativity, especially on the production side.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I had a mentor to guide me, but learning as I went played a big role in shaping who I am today. It pushed me to network more within my industry, connect with other local artists, and ask the right questions that helped me get into the rooms I needed to be in. This journey of self-discovery and growth has been invaluable in building a community and pursuing my goals.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
In this career, you always have to be ready to pivot. I remember one particular time on set during Memorial Day weekend when we were filming outside. The plan was to get our hair and makeup done at a nearby house and then head to the location. But that house fell through last minute, and we had no choice but to do our makeup in the sweltering heat outside. Our production team had to scramble to get tents to shield us from the sun. It was one of those moments that really tested our adaptability!
