Today we’d like to introduce you to Benjamin Wilson-scott

Hi Benjamin, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.

I always wanted to write music, at least as far back as I can remember. I have memories of being a small & shy five-year-old hitting the family upright piano and thinking I sounded like the records my Dad would play in the car – Bob Dylan, the Beatles, & Jefferson Starship.

When I was ten my oldest brother went to university. Of course, like any younger brother, I helped myself to anything he left behind. There was this beaten-up Stratocaster-style guitar sitting there, along with a few teach-yourself-guitar books, and from that moment I knew what I wanted in my future.

The first time I remember deciding to pursue this professionally was in my earlier teens. I was in an Emo/Punk/Alt-Rock band and we played local shows – mostly pubs and function rooms – where no one was there to listen to us. One year we entered a Battle of the Bands and to my surprise, we won. Pictures in the local newspaper on a beachside hotel balcony. I remember being so happy but after a few days I wondered why everything seemed the same, no one cared about our excitement and the music was too Vans Warped Tour for our small town.

The next week I was approached by a friend who had listened to our music & said that it resonated in a way that made them feel seen and heard. Right then I understood what I loved about music. Nothing changed except I then knew what drove me.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?

Making a living in any creative industry is always a challenge. Some of the biggest issues are financial, even something as simple as taking on work can be a challenge if there are financial hurdles to overcome.

Saying that I think feeling isolated is the biggest struggle to overcome. There are times when you work alone and also times when you feel at odds or in competition with the people around you. Creating a strong and supportive network of colleagues and having a fulfilling personal life is important in continuing a creative career.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?

I’m a Producer and Songwriter based in West Sussex, UK, specializing in vulnerable indie-folk music. Think Phoebe Bridgers, Bon Iver, or Anna Tivel. I love creating honest, intimate music and bringing songs to life in my studio. Whether someone needs a co-writer, arranger, multi-instrumentalist, engineer, or just a fresh pair of ears, I’m here to help every step of the way.

I always work with a ‘song-first’ perspective. This sets me apart from other Producers as a lover of the craft of Songwriting first. From this mentality, I try to keep things simple, help the artist say what they have to say in the most concise way & emphasize those gut-wrenching moments that need to hit hard.

I’ve been lucky enough to have my work played on major radio stations, streamed billions of times, and even win some awards. I’m most proud of the relationships I’ve made throughout my career and hope to continue working with incredible artists, writers, musicians & engineers in the future.

What were you like growing up?

I was a shy kid in a big traditional family and maybe struggling to get my voice heard growing up makes me now value the honest connections that making music collaboratively can bring. Music has always been my passion, from playing piano as a small kid to playing guitars in bands and touring throughout university and my 20s.

Outside of music, I found a love of poetry through Mary Oliver, an amazing writer who focused on existential thought through the lens of nature and sometimes also an appreciation of the world around us. My partner and I love to hike and have spent many vacations hiking mountain ranges wherever we could.
