We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alexander Kuri a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alexander, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
Clearly there are positive and negative things about pursuing your dreams by getting out of the process that we are all used to living, but I believe that is exactly what it is about, working on yourself, looking for your own opportunities, getting together with the right people and never stopping experimenting with your art.
Definitely, all the time & effort I invested in my education was worth it. I think that starting your own project is the dream of any professional, and unfortunately in most cases your personal dream or project, starts taking form after many years of working for others. For me, my project has been a priority, I have worked hard on long before a formal job, and today I can say that working towards my dreams is the best decision I’ve made.
Everything is a part of a process, nothing ever develops overnight and everything has its timeline. I think that is one of the greatest lessons I have learned, always being grateful for the way things take place, has given me a new perspective on how to achieve what I desire, and I am so happy and grateful for the way my creative project has taken form, that I do not plan to stop, ever.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Alexander Kuri and in the social media world I’m known as “Kurisaurioo”. Four years ago I started my personal project, my mission being to spread my love for music, concerts, & music news through videos on social media. It has evolved into a full-time job, and I’ve been able to conduct interviews with artists I admire, I’ve been able to review music I love, attend concerts and festivals I never thought I’d be able to.
I’m born and raised in Mexico City, I consider myself lucky enough to live in a city that is full of concerts, and events related to what I love most, and now I get to participate in and work in this industry.
What I do best, and I do most, is talk about music. Either with friends, with family, and mostly on social media. I talk about everything that happens day after day within the world of pop, reggaeton, hip hop, rock, & Mexican Regional music. But I love and talk about all genres and anything I consider interesting to talk about.
My dream has always been to have a space in which I can express myself. A safe space where I can voice my opinions, tell stories, give relevancy to the news I find interesting, and create a community where we can discuss the music we love and talk about what isn’t being talked about.
Currently, we have a community of almost 200 thousand people on socials, and I’m so grateful for their support, and all of my achievements and opportunities I have my community to tank for.

How did you build your audience on social media?
This is the question I believe we all ask ourselves before starting any project: Who is going to watch me? Why will they watch me? Why am I doing it? How will I connect with people I don’t know?
From my four years of experience as a content creator, I can say the following:
The decision to create content and the path towards seeking an audience is definitely something that requires a firm decision that comes from your own confidence. In my case, the main challenge was overcoming the fear of being on camera, overcoming the fear of my own voice and the way I express myself. I had to overcome this, in order to reach the final challenge: to stop caring about other’s opinions and continue pursuing my dream.
It’s definitely harder to start creating content than to keep doing it, once the inertia hits. I believe that before starting, you need to convince yourself that, regardless of whether anyone pays attention to your art, you have to move forward with the project. What matters is that you love and care about it, you must nurture it, so that it can appeal to others, and they will start to nurture it as well. A piece of advice I always give is; to create things you enjoy, create things you’d buy, make content that you’d love to watch, do what you love, and watch others follow your lead. This way of thinking has helped me a lot on my journey.
Depending on what you do, to build your audience, you need to consider two things: What do you want to share? And, Who is your target audience? Based on these questions, find all the variations of content you can create for that audience. In my case, I like to approach music from a “mainstream” or “pop” perspective, which is why I believe my main audience is diverse. But within that variety, I love talking about hip-hop, so I’ve created a niche around my favorite artists in that genre. It is currently some of my best content, because I made something that I would love to watch myself and created a community that shares my love for music.
Finding the relationship between what you want to express, where you want to communicate it, and how you’re going to deliver the message is the most important part of building an audience. I highly recommend diversifying your content and the topics you talk about. If you decide to focus one niche, make sure you talk about it in many different ways, to a point where you can talk or work on the same thing every day without it becoming repetitive. I believe that’s quite challenging, but if I managed correctly you can reach a niche. I still work on it every day, success is non-linear. So if I could get to where I am, so can you.
Your audience is a mix of everything you are. That needs to be clear to you. That’s why you have to be yourself, and that’s the secret to finding an audience: being authentic and seeking people who love the same things you do.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being a creative is no small thing. It’s definitely a challenge, and you will want to outdo yourself every day. I think that’s what I love what I do—the challenge of bettering yourself every day.
Without a doubt, always wanting more is something that defines me. I enjoy what I do more and more every day, and I’ve created my dream job for myself, just by pushing and doing what I love. Before doing what I love every day, I felt like all the doors were closing on me, I felt emotionally empty. I didn’t know what to do with my future, so I decided instead of looking for doors that were unlocked, I would jump through a window.
I think it’s very rewarding to meet people who do what you do, but with a different vision. You can learn from people who love the same things as you, but have a different perspective on the way they make their craft.
I love my community, and I’m forever grateful to them. The people who show love and trust in my art are my greatest strength. I couldn’t be happier with who I’ve become today, but none of this would be possible without the support of my online community, and the support of my family and friends, that have believed in me from day 1.
For me, there’s nothing more surreal than people associating you with what you love the most. Being the direct link between people and their favorite artists is one of the greatest gifts I’ve been given. It’s a huge responsibility, and I promise I won’t let my community down.
I will take care of and love what I do so that I can inspire others to do the same, I promise you, there’s nothing like realizing what is possible. To realize that opportunities do exist, and you get to create them. And your dreams are viable as long as you trust in yourself, and never stop creating, nurturing, caring, and most important loving your dreams and projects.
