We were lucky to catch up with R. White recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi R., thanks for joining us today. One of the most important things small businesses can do, in our view, is to serve underserved communities that are ignored by giant corporations who often are just creating mass-market, one-size-fits-all solutions. Talk to us about how you serve an underserved community.
As the author of “Unmuted: From Silence to Song, Pain to Poetry, Fear to Freedom,” I share my journey through PTSD and recovery using raw, unfiltered poetry. In the U.S., about 8 million adults experience PTSD in a given year, highlighting the urgency of addressing this issue. My work explores powerful themes such as domestic abuse, religious apostasy, sexual assault, and the complexities of motherhood. Each poem serves as a testament to my growth and healing, crafted with deep honesty and introspection.
From the depths of trauma to the heights of empowerment, these verses reflect the intricate tapestry of human experience. I aim to reach diverse communities—people of color, veterans, the disabled, and all those grappling with trauma—offering empathy and connection through my words. My hope is to break the silence around these often stigmatized issues, especially within marginalized communities, encouraging open dialogue and understanding.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a published writer is the profound connection I can forge with my audience. Although I’m relatively new to this space, I’ve already encountered so many readers who have found solace in my work, feeling less alone in their experiences. That kind of impact is truly meaningful.
When I share my poetry, I do so from a deeply personal place, uncertain of how my most vulnerable expressions will resonate. Yet, the response has been overwhelming—especially from women and people of color who approach me to discuss the publishing and writing process, eager to share their own stories. Knowing that my work inspires others to find their voices is an incredible validation of my journey.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Healing and embracing authenticity have been key to building my reputation, both in writing and in my business endeavors. I believe in being direct and genuine in my storytelling, as this honesty fosters deeper connections with my readers. In a world that often lacks transparency, I think it’s crucial to share our truths. People resonate with sincerity, and that’s what we need more of today.
