We were lucky to catch up with Shannon Grant recently and have shared our conversation below.
Shannon, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I actually stumbled upon content creation while being laid up from an injury. There’s only so much television you can watch, so I was playing around on the internet and found a Kbeauty platform where you can review products.
From that first Kbeauty platform led to another, and another. My social media presence grew and I was asked to review products and/or create ugc.
Knowing what I know now, I think if I could change anything, it would be that I’d have done more research on common practices and not sold myself short.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
First and foremost, I’m a licensed cosmetologist and esthetician. As I mentioned in a previous question, I stumbled upon a Kbeauty platform featuring skincare. Skincare is in my wheelhouse and a craft I know intimately. For that reason, I was immediately drawn in.
What I generally do for a brand/client is provide them exposure in a fun and unique way. Many content creators opt to create pretty aesthetically pleasing media. While that’s all well and good, often times pretty creations do not often scream “look at me”. I try to think out of the box and highlight that product.
I think I’m most proud that I’ve been a judge for the Clean Beauty Awards. For me, it’s such a great honor to be recognized for my education and hard work.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I think just as we tout the message to support and shop local, the same can be said for creatives. If you’re having an event, grand opening, or sale, reach out to a local content creator to promote it.
In turn, you’re providing them with opportunities and experience to hone their skills while allowing them to promote you to their followers.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I think a lot of people have a fantastical idea of what content creators do. The common misconception is that we walk around with our phones attached to our faces and we record every minute of our lives.
All projects start with a concept that the client generally relays to us. From that. we need to realize their vision by adequately telling a story by static images/and or videos. Editing takes a great deal of time and if a write up is needed, accurately conveying whatever needs to be said is essential.
In conclusion, a content creator is a: promoter, salesman, photographer, videographer, editor, and journalist.
