We recently connected with Miist and have shared our conversation below.
Miist, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
My new worldwide initiative of important songs. My motto is, ‘Meaningful songs for a difficult world.’. Since my first album and songs have received so much attention including multiple Top 30 Billboard hits and global music awards I wanted to go back to my first love of writing important songs that stir people to act. The first song of this series is called, “Could You Lend Me a Smile”. It is about the epidemic of loneliness that is so pervasive now. We are the most connected and most lonely in our history. The song tells a true story of a man who was only 20 years old when he died, alone in his apartment in Tokyo. His neighbors didn’t find him for months. In the song I ask the question to all of us, ‘What if he had just received a few smiles? Would his life have ended differently? There are so many simple things that we each can do to make our world better. I hope my songs can contribute to this.

Miist, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Though a newbie on the music scene at 36, Miist the singer has had two Top 30 hits on the Billboard Adult Contemporary charts this year.
Already, she has worked with industry legends like Narada Michael Walden, Carlos Santana, and Tony Succar.
Narada, a multi-Grammy® Award-winning artist, even produced her first album, “The Songs from the Living Room.” During his career, Narada has also produced for artists like Barbara Streisand, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Aretha Franklin.
Miist and Narada recorded a duet, “It’s Too Late to Love You,” which is currently #21 on the Billboard AC charts, and rising.
“From the moment I heard her unique voice, I wanted to work with her,” the legendary producer said.
Miist is under consideration for a Grammy® Award nomination for her duet with Narada and as “Best New Artist.”
“People have asked me, where does the music come from,” Miist said during her album release party in August. “Do I think music is a talent, a gift from God, definitely,” she said.
“I don’t see how it is possible but when I feel a strong emotion, either my own or touched by someone else’s story, I just start hearing a melody and that melody matches exactly that emotion,” said Miist.
“That makes me believe this is from God because I didn’t try to work on it, it just came to me, the visionary singer/songwriter said.
Miist said that the scenes, like a movie, pop into her head as she writes. “The story in my head tries to complete it in movie form.”
For instance, while writing her hit duet with Narada, Miist said “I see this couple. They love each other very much. They just can’t go on because it hurts more being together than being separated. I see them standing in the rain waiting for two buses going to different cities. And once they get on that bus, they’re never going to see each other again.”
“Then the melody comes out to match the story,” says Miist. “That’s how I see stories.”
Miist was born in Harbin, China, and had no formal music training.
“Nobody in my family plays music,” she explains. “People don’t understand where I got it from. I know that talent is not from me, it’s from God for sure, and that’s beyond my understanding.”
After surviving liver cancer, Miist found an old ukulele and began strumming. For solace, she sang and posted to the internet. Her posts attracted a young San Francisco girl, and ultimately, Miist met and married her father.
Her husband saw talent and pleaded with Miist to teach herself to play the piano during COVID-19. Today, Miist is a music industry sensation.
“As soon as I started writing songs, I realized it’s therapeutic for me. All the emotions I never knew how to share with anyone had finally found a way out,” said Miist.
With two major music awards, two potential Grammy nominations, and two Top 30 Billboard AC hits, while it’s a bit early to put Miist in the same category as Cher or Adele, but for sure, the miracle of Miist is off to a fantastic start.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I was abandoned by my parents when I was 5 at a boarding school. My dad never returned and it took me 20 years to reestablish a relationship with my mother. At 28 I was diagnosed with terminal cancer and given a few weeks to live. I survived through a miracle of friends and an amazing surgeon in Canada.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Touching people through my music. With all my trauma I have always found it difficult to connect with people but with my music it has opened ways for me to share who I am and what I feel with others. I’m hoping my story and songs will in turn provide strength and hope to those who need it.
