We recently connected with Agajuan Culmer and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Agajuan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
From a very young age, I knew I was meant to pursue a creative and artistic path. Growing up, I immersed myself in the vibrant world of the arts—music, acting, and modeling. Music quickly became my sanctuary, allowing me to express my emotions, tell my stories, and escape into melodies and lyrics. I was captivated by the performing arts, often spending time alone creating scenes in my mind and embodying different characters. I’d dress up, make up songs, and dream of being on a stage or screen.
Even though I grew up in a Christian home with traditional beliefs, where self-expression wasn’t always seen in the same light as I envisioned, I knew I wanted something different. I always wanted to express myself in a way that felt liberating and uplifting, not just for me, but for others who may feel the same. I would hear artists on the radio or watch actors in movies and feel a deep connection—I knew then, deep down, that I wanted to be a star. It wasn’t easy convincing my parents to understand my dream, but I remained committed to expressing myself authentically.
That early sense of creative longing drove me to pursue my path, and it’s been the guiding light ever since.
Agajuan , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Agajuan. A 21-year-old Bahamian artist singer/songwriter with a unique knack for creating detailed worlds within my releases. Informed by my vulnerable pen, I candidly paint my coming-of-age journey as I grow into the prolific artist I know I can be.
Growing up, I immersed myself in the vibrant world of the arts. Music became my sanctuary, allowing me to explore and express my emotions and stories through melodies and lyrics. The performing arts captivated my imagination, driving me to pursue acting and modeling, where I could embody different characters and narratives. In addition to my musical journey, I developed a keen interest in photography and graphic design. Each of these disciplines has honed my skills and allowed me to build a versatile and dynamic artistic portfolio.
My earliest memories are punctuated by melodies and colors, with my mother often recounting how I’d spontaneously break into song, echoing the mood of the moment, whether it be sleepy, hungry, or jubilant. It was in these moments that I discovered the transformative power of music and its ability to evoke emotion and connect people on a deeper level.
My latest single, ‘Solar’ released in August 2024, is a testament to my growth as an artist, blending @Pop and @R&B/Soul elements to create a unique soundscape. Stay tuned for more updates and connect with me through my latest tracks and playlists on Spotify.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
To truly support artists, creatives, and a thriving creative ecosystem, society needs to foster an environment where artists feel free to grow, develop, and express themselves authentically. First and foremost, consumers should allow artists the space to evolve on their own terms. Too often, creatives are pressured to conform to trends or commercial expectations. Allowing them to take creative risks will lead to more genuine, groundbreaking work.
Additionally, we need accessible platforms that give all artists the opportunity to showcase their talents, regardless of their background or financial resources. Integrating the arts into education is crucial, too—nurturing creativity from a young age can create more well-rounded individuals and ensure future generations value and support the arts.
It’s equally important to build inclusive and diverse communities. By supporting diverse voices and ensuring representation from all backgrounds—whether racial, gender, socioeconomic, or cultural—artists will feel supported by a community that reflects the richness of society. When artists see themselves in the world around them, it strengthens their confidence to create and share their stories.
Finally, protecting intellectual property is vital. Strengthening laws and awareness around intellectual property ensures that artists’ work is respected, and that they are fairly compensated for their creations. By providing fair protection and compensation, society can sustain the livelihood of artists and allow creativity to thrive without exploitation.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
As an artist from The Bahamas, my vision is to break barriers and carve a global
platform for Bahamian talent, creating opportunities for aspiring artists, both young and old. My dream
is to not only share my own creativity and gift with the world, but to also open doors for others from my
homeland, showcasing the unique talent and culture we hold. One day, I aspire to open my own studio
and record company, where I can nurture and push local talent, providing a space where Bahamians can
shine and be heard on the world stage. We are truly blessed and talented, and I want to be a driving
force in elevating that truth.
