We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jake & Mike Of Limitless Mental Performance a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jake & Mike, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Patience and persistence have been the two qualities that have stood out to us throughout the past two years of building our private practice. Numerous trials have tested us and taken our attention along the way, but our approach has always been to stay focused on our ultimate goal and remain open to the next opportunity.
We’ve done many presentations and workshops for various organizations and teams that haven’t necessarily panned out, yet we haven’t allowed that to diminish our motivation. There’s always something to learn and improve upon, and our approach continues to evolve. A key has been not to take it personally, and to remain open if/when the organization/team/individual is ready.
We believe that doing good work, showing up on time, communicating in a timely manner, and being reliable are the things that build success.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We met at the University of Denver while pursuing a Master’s Degree in Sport & Performance Psychology. During that time, we achieved the same internship with the Winter Park Competition Center and grew immensely, both as friends and as professionals. Through the long car rides and long hours of work, we realized we have a similar passion for the world of action sports and the role psychology plays in achieving success in this world. We also realized that Colorado was where we wanted to call home, and ultimately, we both valued autonomy and freedom more than anything in our work.
Upon graduation in 2022, we started a private practice named Limitless Mental Performance that provides mental performance services to athletes and other high performers both locally in the Denver area and throughout the world. We quickly achieved our credentials as Certified Mental Performance Consultants (CMPCs) through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP).
Two years in, our mission has stood strong. Our goal is to highlight the value of training the mind in creative ways and to improve accessibility to these resources at scale. Ultimately, we work with individuals to expand their idea of possible.
We train the brain. Essentially, we work with individuals and/or teams to build mental skills that help to better respond to the demands of a high performance environment. Some of these skill sets could look like us training an executive board member to leverage mindfulness practices that can fit into their established pre-presentation routine, or it can be training attentional flexibility with a downhill mountain bike racer in the form of competitive attentional switching games alongside their teammates. It can be a series of breathwork training exercises geared toward improving a client’s CO2 tolerance and resting breath pattern, or it could involve teaching youth how to meditate in a way that makes it fun, challenging, and engaging. The list of applications goes on, and there is opportunity everywhere.
We are most proud of ourselves for sticking to our vision. In a world where there’s a lot of stigma and not a lot of understanding of what we do, paired a lack of pre-established pathways post-graduation, we’ve successfully created our own lane through patience and persistence. We’ve also managed to creative, maintain, and improve a healthy relationship as both business partners and friends. Our specialties, what we’re proud of, and what sets us apart are all interrelated, which is why we love what we do.
We have specialities in action sports, endurance sports, injury-rehabilitation/recovery, high-performance training, adaptive athletics, and are also actively keeping the door open to other domains of performance. Both of us subscribe to mindfulness-based practices with an emphasis on purpose and living a values-driven life.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
One thing we do to express originality in this field is sharing content that displays mental performance in contexts that are interesting and relevant to us, while also providing evidence-based tools, explanations, and resources that spark the reader’s intrigue and open the door for them to exercise these skills themselves. It’s a big part of our social media strategy, and we lead with value through education. Check out our social media to see what we mean!
In marketing ourselves, it began with cold outreach and has since evolved to include word-of-mouth connections, partnering with like-minded local businesses, teaming up with multi-national organizations such as Rockstar Energy and Dew Tour, providing in-person pro-bono workshops, pop-up/engagement spaces, virtual interviews, local practitioner meetups, newsletters, blog writing, and creating videos showcasing mental skills in action from the athlete’s perspective. We expect this approach to keep evolving and are excited for what’s next!

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
1- We are not the experts. We view the client as the expert on their own experience and performance domain. We look to their unique domain expertise and life experience to inform our approach. We are trained to provide guidance, helpful perspectives, insights, and evidence-based resources intended to improve performance, enhance enjoyment, and boost overall well-being.
2- You are not your business. Separating the business entity from your sense of self-worth is key. There have been many times when we have felt regret or rejection due to tying our worth to our performance as a business and making this shift has been a huge point of growth for us. Yes, this is our passion, but it does not equate to our worth. We start sessions with an objective lens- how do we make our business successful and provide high-quality services? By not attaching our identity to the outcome of the business, we free ourselves to take leaps, make mistakes, and constantly improve.
