We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lena Hermann a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lena, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I’ve always enjoyed baking and experimenting with flavors and textures. It fills me with joy to see my family and friends enjoy my baking creations. A few years ago, I stumbled upon an instagram account of a baker from my hometown in California. I was mesmerized by her work, and even more that she was able to support herself and her family from her baking business. A thought crossed my mind, “what if I would give it a try too?” I shared my idea with my husband and another close friend, though unsure if this path would work for me. Both my husband and my friend encouraged me to go for it and I’m so glad I did!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Thank you for giving me an opportunity to introduce myself in this space! I’ve been a cake designer for several years now and have enjoyed every aspect of it. I love embracing the different challenges of my job: from a discovery call to delivering the perfect cake to my client. Many of my clients ask me to take over in designing their cakes; I am happy and grateful to know that I have their trust and permission for full creative freedom. When clients send me heartfelt “thank you’s” that the flavor and design of the cake exceeded their expectations- well that’s just the cherry on the top for me.
What I am most proud of , and what sets me apart is that in my area I am one of the first Eastern European Bakers. Every order that I receive is done with full excitement and effort no matter who the client is. My faith is in my work ethic.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I can say with full assurance that I have grown as a cake designer in these past several years. I am so grateful to my clients for not only trusting me with this important part of their events, but that they stayed with me for years. This is one of the most rewarding aspects of my role. Looking back to see how far I have come since the start brings me excitement. I look forward to continue growing and have many goals that I want to achieve. One of them is my plan to develop in decorating even more complex designs. I love the art of modern cake designs and that the sky is the limit in creativity. It is truly a joy for me to see that my clients trust that I can bring their vision to life. It is such an honor for me to play a significant and delicious part in their special occasions.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I suppose eventually I can hire or recruit a social media manager. Until then, I enjoy that many of my followers are people who have personally tasted and seen my work, or those who have shared about @torteandtea by mouth. I have also seen my reach increase when clients tag my work and also when I am more present in my stories, sharing my happy space while creating and engaging with my followers.
One thing that I’ve learned is that when you are passionate about your work, it will shine through and people will recognize it and love it!
I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve my community in this sweet and delicious way!
