Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mo Kills. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mo, appreciate you joining us today. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
let me take you back to my second year of college 2011. I got a refund check and I was thinking to my self how could I use some of this money in order to stretch it or invest it into something that will continue to pay me. At the time I had an older brother who was doing tattoos. So the thought of a tattoo machine came to me. Growing up I just assumed the supplies needed for tattooing would be super expensive because of the prices that artist were charging. To my surprise you could get an entire tattoo kit on eBay for a little under $200 bucks. I dove right in. Purchased the kit and when it arrived I watched the video it came with and read the manual along with what I remember learning from my brother. I started tattooing myself. I eventually started tattooing my friends at school and my friends when I came home from school. The fact I could create something from nothing fascinated me. Also the challenge of the puzzle keeps me engaged because there are always variables that must be figured out in order to come with your A game. From design to placement to the type of skin. I became known for doing tattoos but tattooing didn’t come full circle for me until I moved to Indianapolis 2019 and got into an apprenticeship. I’ve been working as a full time tattoo artist since 2020 now in my own private studio. Looking for my next chapter to continue to create timeless art for people.

Mo, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Mo. @getmotatts on IG. Im from Chicago been living in Indianapolis since 2019. I create timeless art on people’s skin, better known as a tattoo artist. Clients come to me to outwardly express themselves or just for some ink therapy. I’m all about providing an exceptional experience for my clients. I want what ever I am putting into their skin to be custom and personal. The more I know the better I can customize a design to fit the person I am creating for.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is the clients face once they see their finished work combined with your client being your biggest advocate. You can’t put a price on good and loyal clients. By loyal I mean they share their experience and artwork. I believe in collecting art so I don’t feel any type of way when my clients collect other pieces from other artist!

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to make it easier for those who come after me! It was hard for me to get going in this industry but I didn’t give up. This is one of those industries where you hear the term gatekeeping thrown around a lot. At the end of the day you have to find those who are willing to share information.
