We recently connected with Joseph Welch and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Joseph thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken to sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
I am very happy as a business owner. I can’t imagine living life any other way. I do not think about what it would be like to have a regular job. If I ever did so, I may think about it theoretically but not in a longing way. I highly encourage people who are unhappy with their job to make every and all effort to build their own business. Being a business owner seems natural to me – as in the days of old where the majority of people worked for themselves, whether it be the butcher, the cobbler, the farmer or doctor. Despite the struggles that small business owners face there really is no other way to go. I would prefer to have the responsibility of my business succeeding than to have the concerns and worries that an employee may face even when those responsibilities can be daunting.
Joseph , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I photograph commercial and residential properties – interior, exterior, and aerial. When I first began, my offering was elevated photography which was the photographing of residential homes using a 50 foot vehicle mounted telescoping mast. From there I began photographing interiors and then using drones to provide aerial images as well. What sets me apart from others is: 1 Attention to detail 2. Always learning new and better ways to enhance our craft 3. Going the extra mile to ensure that our clients are happy w/the end product. I am proud of the fact that we meet a need for exceptional photography whether a home is 30,000,000 or 100,000. Each job gets whatever attention is needed to best display its selling points. The main things that I want clients to know about my business is that they will be very happy when working with us as we will do whatever it takes to show their listing in the best “light” possible.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding thing about being in the creative business is just that – to create something. To create something out of nothing. What more could I ask for? To see the final result, which in my case would be 25-35 high resolution images displayed in an organized manner displayed on wide computer screen playing as slide show. It provides a sense of accomplishment.
Have you ever had to pivot?
As mentioned earlier I used to provide a service called elevated photography. A service which uses a 50 foot vehicle mounted telescoping mast to take photos of residential homes from an elevated perspective. I used to provide the service to a nationwide real estate photography company in addition having my own clientele. One day this nationwide real estate company “mistakenly” sent me some jobs but they were for interior photos not elevated photos. I called them to notify of them their error but then I decided that perhaps interior photography is something I can and should learn. I put mistakenly in quotations because I do not think it was a mistake. I think it was divine. I did learn how to do interior photography and business took and I never looked back.
